Yes waterproof membrane and baker boards were used. The tile work is just awful. I have to rip out this tile. Can new tile be installed on the previous waterproof membrane or do I just need to reap out to studs?

Down to the studs, a tile shop for new tile with all the necessary trim pieces, and a quality tile setter. The tile shop can give you names of quality setters...expect to pay a lot more than you did for this Bozo.

It may be easier to remove the existing backer because it might be harder to get it smoothed than to just replace it. Also, I bet -- based on your pictures and the fact that this was so badly done -- that the contractor did not bother to shim out the studs so that everything was flush and plumb before the backer went in place. Ripping it down to the studs will give you the opportunity to have it done right.

Yikes! I bet that you had some concerns along the way, but the contractor told you it would all look great when he was done. I empathize with you, and am glad you posted here for a reality check confirming that you weren't being too picky, and that there is no fix short of a tear-out. I hope everything goes right for you from here on out. Maybe you could even press for reimbursement of your costs in small claims court.

Just for reference, I live in a very high cost of living area and had a similar size job done (including a tiled ceiling with cutouts for lights, accent tile, and a linear drain), and the total cost was about $8K. This was by a talented tile setter who was a fanatic for detail:

On the Houzz nightmare scale of tile jobs, this barely moves the needle.

Since others in the thread are recommending starting over, the four different types of tile (bathroom floor, shower walls, shower floor and shower niche) don't appear to relate to each other very well or make for a cohesive look. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this disappointing result.

Thank you all for the advice I really appreciate it. He did say it will look great once done when I had originally said they don't look aligned. And that the tiles will set in. I don't know anyways. I probably could have done a better job by myself. I have told him it looks bad and needs a redo. He says I should put a blue tape on all areas needing to be fixed. Like he'll. I just put a big fat blue x on all the walls. I am just exhausted and he has done more damage to my home than this batbroom. Scratched my newly installed hardwood floors. This has been a month and half job and the cost kept rising. For a small size bathroom. Oh my

Finally took the rubbish down. Thank you all. It took him a month to do that. I found better people and it took them 3 days to complete it.

Yes. He needs to do a redo. I believe one complete tile should be 'centered' in the center of the shower wall and then work out from there. He did not do that. Also the large gaps between tile where it is grouted is unacceptable. If you are working with a big box store, complain and demand they do it over. We just had the same problem with the backsplash in our kitchen. It too them THREE DIFFERENT TRIES of redoing it before they got it right {HD}. I advice you don't settle for shoddy work and speak up. They were not worried about doing quality work and making you happy, so I would not worry about what they think. You paid for a good job, they need to give you one.....can you tell I'm mad? lol! Still upset from my own reno and seeing what they did to your bathroom makes me mad too.

Your new shower...better...but still not right. Any spot where two planes meet (the corners of the walls, the seat and the wall, the floor and the walls) should be caulked, not grouted. Have them remove the grout, carefully, with a Dremel tool and then caulk with silicone. Was it flood tested to make sure all the water drains without leaving any puddles?
