Ideas for utility boxes

We have a couple utility boxes in front of our house that currently has a shrub planted around it. Well the utility company chopped away at it and it now looks horrible so we are having the whole thing removed. Might just leave them as is but some planting ideas would be nice to explore also. Obviously if we do some planting the boxes would need to be easily accessible for the utility companies. Maybe long grass or something?

This isn't our property but a similar setup. The green box on our lawn is a little smaller.

Tall perennials or tall grass or a shrub like Spiraea or Annabelle Hydrangea that will regrow relatively quickly if it needs to be cut down to ground level. Or if it's short enough, they do make artificial "rocks" that are made to fit over and camouflage this type of thing, and you can surround them with plantings.

Just pretend the utility box isn't there. It's a fact of life and you should not design your garden around it. Often planting around a box just attracts attention to it.

Yeah I somewhat agree. Ends up looking like a shrine to the utility boxes sometimes. We will likely do nothing.

I do like the faux rock covers but our boxes are pretty tall and right against the sidewalk so those would look odd in our location.

Are you talking about the raised bed planting?

So the shrub is gone and here are the boxes, the one box is leaning which makes it look worse. On the bright side the shrub left a nice outline for a potential garden if we do that.

The little garden bed at the end of the path did a couple days ago btw. Suggestions for that would be appreciated also, lol. Both sites are full blaring sun all day.

Cool. That looks nice. We were resigned to just throwing grass seed down but I mean it would be little effort to plant some tall grass around them since it's just dirt right now. Still don't know if it draws attention to or away from them though. Hmmmm

For me, I wasn’t trying to hide them completely, but just wanted something pretty to look at there. It was just another bed I wanted in my yard. :)

ETA: Your user name cracks me up. My husband has it as his cell ringtone, and it makes people laugh when it rings in public. :D

Yeah for real. We started the one little bed and now that the shrub is gone it did all the hard work for us in getting rid of the grass. Just need a little edging and some top soil and good to go with the bonus of those boxes not being a focal point.

And yeah I feel like my username is a bit of an inside joke.

We live in a subdivision with narrow lots. One utility box - the green 2-3 foot tower-looking one is on the very edge of our lawn. To plant around it would make the planting on our neighbor's yard. There are larger utility boxes on lot next to ours on the other side. It is an access area which does not belong to anyone but the homeowners association and they will not do any planting right now (long story). Some of the other plantings others have done in the neighborhood do just call attention to the boxes. I am wondering about bush clover/lespedeza. Never planted it but it seems to "spread out", but needs to be cut each year? If I plant it next to the smaller utility box would it cover it during growing season. If I just planted it I would not have to worry about digging in neighbor's yard. If I planted it on my yard on other side, it looks like I would I least not see the large utility boxes from my yard, at least not much during growing season. Any experiences with bush clover? Any other ideas?
