I really do not recommend to use it at all. Balanced fertilizer over the whole year produces plenty of blooms - especially if you disbud for 3-4 months before the show. Problem is after the show - the plant can go into decline.

OoC, on a show related note .... So at an AV show, do different people/groups/societies put up decorative displays? Or do vendors simple have a table(s) where upon they have their wares?

At orchid shows, such decorative displays are the norm and a display many incorporate a large number of orchids. No other blooming plants are allowed in a display.

The plants to be judged include African Violets, Saintpaulia species and other Gesneriads. Plants from other families can be used in design classes, dish gardens, terrariums to compliment AVs.

After the judging is done - the winners will be moved to the Honor Row. The commercial exhibitors have special classes - display tables - can be horticultural only or include a design. Can be AVs only - or they can include gesneriads.

I saw designers using cut flowers - baby breath for an example - in the arrangements - but the focal point of the design is an AV or AV blossoms.

Joanne - not this year. I am committed to a Gesneriad Convention - in Boston - this year - and 2 very expensive trips just do not fit in my budget. Next year AVSA Convention - will be Houston - and I have family there to stay.

Irina, The Gesneriad Convention in Boston sounds like fun and easier to get to. Also, lots of things to do in Boston in the summer. The Houston Convention should be grand with all the big names there! Joanne

Usually at the Conventions schedule is so busy - barely any time to investigate the city, Usually there are good tours set up for attendees.

Already told DH we're heading to Houston next year lol. :-D

Is it always in early June? It often conflicts with a family birthday.
