Should I change the shape of my island countertop?

Y'all were such a help with my backsplash/window issue, I'm hoping to get some feedback on my island.

So we're just doing a "refresh" of the kitchen. Not changing cabinetry, just replacing countertops and adding a backsplash. I don't know what to do with the end of our island. The island is kind of... California-shaped? There's no overhang of the first part, but there's an overhang of the angled lower half. We do sometimes sit at the longer area (where the barstools are), but never at the angled end. I don't think I care for the cut corners at the end of it, it feels dated? I understand the utility of it, but since we never sit there, and don't store a garbage can or anything there, should I keep that overhang?

What are my options? Could I square off the corners but leave the overhang, or would I hit my hips on them all the time? Could I get rid of that overhang altogether (but leave the part where the stools are)? Would that look off balance? I don't think I'd like the look of a rounded end, either. Advice?

Just by glancing at it I would keep it the same, but just slightly round the corners instead of chopping them off like they are now. Looks like more of an overhang where your stools are would be nice too.

Are both ends the same? I think I would square them off...corners can be rounded if you want. We have an island with square corners and a narrow passage past the end and have had no problem hitting my hip....our island is counter height.

The other end doesn't have an overhang, and is just squared with the cabinets. Do you mean square them off as in, kind of add back the missing corners that have been cut off? Or as in chop off the piece that's shaped like a trapezoid? Does that make sense?

I think it needs to be shaped so that there is at least a 12" overhang on the "back side" of the cabinets and both ends should be flush to cabinets

jck910 - It's difficult to explain, but if we expand the overhang where the stools are, the angle at the "outer corner of California" (far left in pic 2), if that makes sense, means that we'd only be left with an area about 15 inches wide for a stool to fit. It would be 12" deep, but only like 15" wide because of where that angle would move to.

I would leave the overhang at the back and take the short edge back to the cabinets.

If you are looking at the first picture the angle would move more to the left.

I would get rid of the overhang on the one side and have the overhang go all along the back where those stools are.
