Fireplace tile colors?

last modified: 8 years ago

I need to pick a tile color for my fireplace, which will be stacked. I am leaning towards white, or possibly dark blue. I’m worried the fireclay vintage blue color is too light and their abyss blue is too cobalt. I have samples of fireclay brick tiles. One nice thing about some of the brick tile there are hints of brick color coming through, which is the exact color as the red rock walls in the house. The concrete floors will be very very very light grey. The ID suggested I pick some tiles and then she will order the samples to see how it will work. The original tile was moss green mosaic, which someone before me painted horribly over.

Here is the fireplace..we would tile all the way around...gold part will be replaced with something else (black?). please ignore all the bird cages, they are temporary...I HATE my sofa and bar stools. Also, the soffit will be deleted.

Back of fireplace has the clock on it:.

Tiles:

Vintage blue:

Abyss blue (more glazed):

Parakeet:

Others I like are the dark green and white.

I like this fireplace:

Thank you for any ideas or recommendations!!!

Why don't you strip the paint off the tile and see how it looks?

Hi pal, unfortunately portions of the original tile are missing. They fireplace is such a focal point. Maybe brick tiles arent the way to go, unless i do white? Maybe a white mosaic?

Here is what it looks like:

    What size is it, 2x2?

1x1, but I’m not sure if theyre original to the house. A lot of stuff was changed when I bought the home. SPecifically, the midcentury breeze block was made to look like Roman columns. All the original beautiful patio concrete with embedded mosaic tiles was covered in thick ugly cool decking. ALso the kitchen was 1980’s. When I bought the house there were builtin cabinets on the clock side of the fireplace that stretched all the way out to the soffit. THey were rotted. There was also a mantle in front of them. I tore them out to open the room up. Now you can see the views from the kitchen. When I got past the ugly cabinets the previous owners had replaced them with, the back cabinet panels against the fireplace were painted turqoise and olive green/avocado green. I think they were partly large speakers.

1x1 slightly pillowed tile would more likely than not be original and I would likely do the same format.

Thanks Pal. What format are you saying you would do?

1x1 or 2x2 ceramic or porcelain identical or similar to what's on there now.

Sandplum, thank you! Parakeet is the same color that the ID liked, although she didnt have all the colors when she was here. I really like that one too. I especially like the name and cant help but wonder if it was meant to be because I have pet birds!

What do you guys think about white drywall all the way around, or white mosaic tile in front, so I can hang things on back and sides, with the fireplace interior in yellow, green or blue? I dont know if I would have to paint or reptile the inside? Or would that look terrible? Can the screen be changed out to something that would let the color through? It’s a gas fireplace.

I'd tile all around as it was originally. Are you going to use the fireplace?

Thanks Pal. The fireplace west and north ends were surrounded by cabinets, which I tore out. There was a hall under long soffit that abutted cabinets. Someone before me removed the hallway. The house was originally not this open. The kitchen was a dark cave with 7 foot ceilings. I removed all walls and most of the soffit to open the space. I’m removing the rest of the soffits soon.

I dont think I will ever use the fireplace. I had an engineer look at it. I dont think he did a comprehensive analysis, but he said it is probably important for sheer force with high winds because of all the glass. I like the separation it gives from the living room.

I am wondering about doing a flat white 1x1 tile on the front, but not sure about the transition to the side. It would be nice to hang things on the fireplace. Directly across from it is a bar that is not finished. It would be nice to tie the finishes in.

Here is another pic. The original hall was under the dropped soffit which previous owners removed. The bar is where the yellow cabinnets are. Around the fireplace and stretching to the soffit were a bunch of builtins and speaker cabinets.

Could you match the stone facings?

That would make it look like more stone piers.

I would probably tile it like this only white.

Here is plain white mosaic: with the white walls, I think it would be textural and period appropriate. You can always hang things on tile if you go in through grout lines.

Basic Daltile Keystones come in 1" an 2" with plenty of trim peices to wrap the corners.

Thanks lazygardens -I thought about playing off the red/pink colors, but I’m too scared to do it. I am thinking now that the white that I have looks nice and maybe I should carry the same theme of white but in a tile.

Thanks Pal. That is a good suggestion. I do like it. I might see if fireclay has a white 2x2 or 1x1 that has a little variation too.

They have 2x2 at Fireclay, but no 1x1. The Daltile has slight variation and is probably most authentic since it is almost identical to what is there now. And much less expensive.

Hi Pal, I will defintely look into it. They have a 1x1 in the mosaic tiles. But you are right that these are very expensive.
