Generating trifoliate rootstock

last modified: 8 years ago

I've never grafted before, but I'm curious to try it. I have a Flying Dragon (?) that's the only surviving part of a tree that was sent to me in too-cold weather. It's sending up new shoots from a trunk of rather decent diameter. I'm planning to put this plant into the ground later this spring, after the weather settles a bit.

So how do people generate their FD rootstock? Mostly from seed, or can I air layer or root cuttings? Or perhaps graft directly onto the main plant, then air layer later? Anyone have recommendations?

Flying Dragon as a cultivar always has zigzag stems an strongly curved thorns, with much smaller leaves than other Poncirus varieties. The tree in your picture has straight trunk growth, and much larger leaves than the true FD cultivar. Flying Dragon seed, from which the root stock is grown, is only approximately 50 percent true from seed. It looks like someone must have not been all that careful selecting a true FD seedling for their rootstock..
