Trim away, or dig out, all the root suckers you don't want and just leave the one trunk. They are really tough plants. You can also transplant the suckers to other locations in your yard.

Very likely the topping of the plant encouraged the root suckers to grow more quickly than they normally do. Eventually, older Chindos will sucker anyway, forming an ever-widening colony.

i doubt that you will beat that clump back to a single truck ...

so if that was my goal .... i would remove it.. and select out some smallish single root suckers .... pot them up ... and grow a root mass ... for fall or spring replanting ... which ever is appropriate in your area ....

the potting is just so you can keep them near water ... so you can take a bit more care with water .... to grow some root volume ...

when you transplant all over a large area ... you usually either end up dragging a lot of hose around ... or losing a few in a bad summer ... trust me.. dragging hose gets old real fast.. lol ...

Why on earth would you remove the entire thing and then replant with a sucker? Poster would not have to leave just one trunk. They look fine with 3 to 5 trunks -- similar to crape myrtle. If this is growing in shade, it will take a while to fill out. These are typically used as screens.
