So i planted most of my peas today direct seeded. Just planted, did not water.

If weather is good i will finish planting them tomorrow. Looks like i might be able to squeeze in a few more depending.

I still need to plant the Nap Gene (potential open keel trait)* one. And i might be able to plant both Templeton's Delta Dusk and Heather maybe. I might also try to squeeze in those orc gene peas (orange cotyledons) that may have higher beta carotene. And that's basically it. Room for two more for sure, room for 4-5 more max.

Ok i finished planting peas this morning. Finished with Nap gene, 'Canoe', 'Delta Dusk', and 'Heather'.

Small scale here (Va) :

"Frosty" peas to be planted as soon as the soil is warmed up, too cold here, hope to plant next week if it doesn't snow again, it might.

"Strike" bush snap/beans, to be planted around May 10th or so, hopefully it will be warmer here by then. Winter hangs on.....

Yep. That post was all about peas. If you like snap peas and want to try something new i recommend the purple podded Sugar Magnolia bred by the great Dr. Alan Kapuler of Oregon (Peace Seeds).

I can add some photos if you want of my peas (if i can find them). But yeah i'm using the best i can find to breed even more interesting peas. I have an idea for a pea that produces snap peas all in a bunch, and would be even cooler if they had purple pods, but that requires combining at least 4 recessive genes without the purple genes and 3 more co-dominant genes if it does! So that project will take awhile, though last year i had a partially purple pea that had the pods in clumps. I'll try to find that photo.

In general i have had trouble growing most varieties of snap peas here. Not sure why. Perhaps just not adapted to my climate. Amish Snap is one that did the worst three years in a row. But i haven't given up yet on them, just had other peas that had my attention first. But it seems most people like snap peas the most so i figure i might as well start breeding those.

Very interesting! Now that I think about it, it seems to me that peas were often used in teaching about genetics! Mendel! With snap peas I can eat the whole thing, but still don't get that many servings. I do sweet peas and favas as well. I have to grow them all fall through winter, and sometimes the first peas I sow don't make it. Below are "Sugar Daddy" sweet peas and "Vroma" fava beans.  I now have Super Magnolia on my wish list, but I'm reading they grow 7 feet! I usually grow short ones since I grow in containers
