Hollyhock roots(?) front Walmart

Never planted hollyhocks. In fact, I don’t even think I’ve ever SEEN hollyhocks in real life, though I’ve been doing lots of research on them since encountering them for the first time. . . I went crazy with the purchases last night and now I have 4 packages of 2 roots each.

Does anyone grow them? I seem to always have trouble with aesthetics in the garden and my questions lean in that direction: where and how are they used? Do they need to be in the back of a flower bed with shorter plantings in front, or will they shine on their own?

I’ve read that the foliage tends to look unattractive so many people plant them behind other bloomers in order to hide the foliage. Which would be the best companion plants?

I have a place for them in my front lawn, just behind a four foot picket fence. They would be the stars of the show but . . . Can they handle it?

Your advice, experience and photos would be great!

Thanks in advance!
