It looks a little anemic but that might be due to soil conditions. Plumbago prefers a slightly acidic soil so check for soil pH and adjust as necessary. Also appreciates deep watering until properly established, then quite drought tolerant.

I'm wondering which Plumbago you mean. Is that an actual Plumbago auriculata? Or Ceratostigma plumbaginoides. Given what I can see of the foliage and habit, and also given your location, I'm guessing the former which actually prefers a neutral to alkaline soil. Do you have something for it to clamber up? Its not very good at self supporting.

Certainly does not look like Ceratostigma. I never had success with Plumbago auriculata in my zone 9b. Always froze. Supposedly good to zone 8 though. This may be just winter doldrums.

Curious. Sources I've read say neutral to alkaline soil. Obviously it is a conservatory plants here but I've seen it many times and in many places growing in limestone areas and against limestone walls. To me it just looks like a marginal plant in winter. A bit scruffy.

gardengal, that is why it also comes in a white-flowering form. ;-) While I like the dark blue cultivars for many mass plantings, it is more difficult to work that color into a mixed landscape. So I always end up with the white. It still attracts marine blue butterflies.

Never heard them liking acidic soil. Mine does fine in potting mix. Soil that doesn't hold too much water for a long period of time. If you're lucky it'll drop the old leaves and push out new growth. Where are you located in CA?
