Some like to grow mini violets with ferns and other small house plants in dish gardens. I once grew Plenty of Pepper, a red AV hybrid outdoors in the shade during the summer in a kumquat pot. They were compatible and it bloomed. Sadly, a scrappy squirrel acquired a taste for it. I applied Louisiana hot sauce to discourage the animal from eating it and it destroyed the poor Violet!

LOL. All my plants tend to get mixed.... Being an apt dweller with way too many plants means getting mixed is pretty much inevitiable! heh

Paul that is exactly it. My minuscule apt means less shelf space. But also, I find that different heights, colors and textures make a group of plants more interesting.

Alabamaav, squirrels can really damage outdoor plantings.

Forty-seven_gw, I do have orchids but other plants as well. Of course the first thing I do is divide them up so that they sit next to another plant that likes similar conditions.

LA hot sauce! What about Cayenne?

I used hot red pepper flakes back in KY (cayenne is one) in Wild bird seed to keep the squirrels at bay. It won't hurt birds, but gives theiving squirrels a fiery surprise!

There's a hefty squirrel that lives by our apartment building who has snapped a baby rose bush in half..... And it dug huge craters in the pot of my ficus on my back porch. I had a pack of 12" bamboo skewers on hand, and I nobly sacrificed 2/3 of the pack to all the pots I had showing the bare dirt (although the rose dirt was covered up with saucers!!!) Skewers went in the soil nasty side up. No squirrel action since then. The pots look odd as hell, and a neighbor wanted to know WTH I had done that for, but I've had no squirrel damage since then, so I can live with the way it looks. Baby rose is recovering...
