Agreed about art to the right -- large scale -- but you could balance it to the left with a group of three items that create a triangle shape. Only use things you really love to look at, though. This art isn't exactly modern, but I just like it with the brick. It would be for you to find a piece that you love.

What about your square, with slightly smaller square at each side also.... though just a 'mantel look' ... I know - why not a wooden arrow [or item of whimsy] way high almost parallel to ceiling angle / point over to upstairs? ! yeh.

Thank you everyone for your input. I agree with a taller piece positioned to the right and lower. I like groveraxle's photo. Kinda funny about the distressed mantle--this is exactly what was installed 30 years ago. It warped and split-they said it was because it was too long. Maybe they've perfected the process so that won't happen again. I agree that the size and height of the brick deserves a more substantial mantle. I'll begin looking for a oversize piece of art, and I even like the shape of the basket you placed there. I didn't mention it, but to the right beyond the clock I have triptych art of a pier. I'll need to make sure this large piece doesn't fight with it. I really appreciate your ideas; they helped immensely!!
