That makes sense. It is not too late as they aren't being delivered for two weeks. The only alternate color in that chair is navy blue velvet. I like that, but feel like it may be too trendy and get out of style in a few years. Any other color suggestions? I was thinking of doing navy blue velvet bar stools and a rug with some blue in it, so wanted the couch and chairs to be as neutral as possible.

Great! The first one is more eclectic and trendy than the second one.

If you go with navy blue velvet bar stools they will make a strong contrast to the neutral rug and sofa. You could connect the stools to the rug/sofa by adding navy velvet pillows BUT then the room will not be as neutral as the two photos you have shared.

Yes that makes sense! I like a lot of styles, but am worried about expensive furniture (ie: couch, chairs) being too trendy and going out of style (and the $$ to buy new ones!). I would rather be creative on accent pieces or barstools- but haven't purchased the velvet barstools yet. I'm open to the idea of changing the chairs to add dimension to the room, but am struggling to picture the room put together.

I don't think anything you have shown us is "too trendy". Think of it this way: even Mid Century modern is still in and coveted today over 1/2 century later. The first photo you shared supports this point - look at how they successfully combined the farmhouse wood console table and the contemporary sofa and the classic coffee table? It all works because of color, shape and scale.

The trick is to be true to your own sensibility and just check in with your gut. If you LOVE something you need to pay attention to your intuition about it.

As far as putting things together, even experts have misses. Just prioritize what you care about most: that will be the inspiration for all future purchases and of course, make sure you can return something so you don't get stuck!

What is your favorite color that is not neutral -- not white or gray?

Neutral can be really good; entirely bland ... not so much.

Keeping the larger furnishings -- and higher priced items -- more neutral than not is a good idea; however, monochromatic can be unappealing and make your space feel more like a store show room rather than a home. Make your home truly yours. Consider choosing a rug and throw pillows and art with at least just a bit of your favorite non-neutral color in them.

It can matter less that you have two chairs that are not a match if the two chairs are two entirely different designs. You might consider a platform rocker or rocking/swivel/recliner for a second chair.

Black with glass for your coffee table and/or end tables could go well with the sofa and chair you've already bought. It need not be metal.
