WHY IS GRAY SO HARD?!?! help

Can anyone recommend a “warm” gray that I should try? I have a north facing bedroom that gets a lot of light from a large bay window. I have a gray upholstered bed and a gray entertainment center. No nightstands yet but I’m leaning toward mirrored ones. I like warm, earthy, cozy colors (...I know, why did I pick gray then...) I tried mindful gray - it looks muddy on one wall and very blue on another. I tried anew gray - love the color! But a smidge too brown/beige. I also tried repose gray - it looks like ice on the wall.

Can anyone recommend a color that is just a little less beige than anew gray before I go a buy a dozen more samples?
(please forgive me for my color illiteracy- I don’t know the right vocab to describe color. And yes, I’ve already read every single post on the internet about these colors and it does me no good )

Here is one of my walls - from left to right above the bed - mindful, anew, repose. Existing wall color is BM Storm.

You can do 3-20”-24”....or 3-20”x30” nothing wider than 20”

A king bed is 76” wide so it is based on that...but your Headboard may be wider so you would have to adjust it a bit..best to hang middle image and have each canvas 3” apart..

Thank you!!! That is very helpful!!!

    Cortney,

Do you have other wedding pics with you and your husband?

Ok I put all of the suggested nightstands up against the fireplace. What do you think? I’m leaning towards the gray or the white one that are on the right. Those are the same model but different colors. Picking a nightstand is harder than I thought it would be! I’m starting to consider just keeping the ones I got.
Another question, would it help (or even be a good idea) to paint the fireplace a whitewashed lookup make it go more with the room??

    Here’s the picture

And Claire, yes I have many wedding pictures. I like the feel of three pictures above the bed.

For your monochromatic scheme none of them don’t really speaks to me except the gray one on top. It is not a bad idea to give your media a white wash if you feel your aren’t too happy with the stain which is already on it

Go with the dark gray ns that blends with the media cabinet and don’t mess with trying to paint anything....I think that really is not necessary...that way the media cabinet just blends in rather than standing out...

If you want creamy white NS why not switch out your media cabinets..take the media cabinet from the family room and move it to the bedroom and put the gray fireplace cabinet in your family room...just a thought!

Thanks Julie, I’ve actually thought of switching them out, but the wall that the family room entertainment center sits on runs perpendicular to our fireplace, so there would be two fireplaces right next to each other. Plus, I love having the white furniture in our living spaces.

So I’ve been living with the nightstands for the the past few days, and I like them. I’ll agree that they aren’t perfect, but I think that they are close enough for now. I think I’m going to leave all the furniture be, and just keep an eye out for furniture that I really love. The nice thing is that all my current bedroom furniture can work in other rooms. I think down road (next fall maybe) I will end up putting this fireplace in the basement and use one of these little nightstands in my little girls room and one in the guest room, as I upgrade my bedroom furniture.
Plus, the more I look at bedrooms, the more I really like the monochromatic look - it looks so cozy. So I think I will stick with that look, even when I do get new furniture. I’ll save the gold for another room.

So now I’m just going to focus on decor. I need lamps and bedding and other decor. Would it better to go with gray or ivory/cream bedding?

HI Courtney, are you still having fun with all this? LOL.

I would definitely get wider nightstands, period. And the more drawers the better in my opinion, so you can hold all your goodies.

There are so many tall gorgeous lamps out there with a silver or glass base that could be beautiful (white/linen shade).

I love, love your wedding photos! Out here in CA, we never hang (or shouldn't hang) big heavy framed anything over our beds in case of a minor shaker, so I have a tapestry. However if you do go with your pics, anything wrapped on canvas would be just right. You do have kids that jump on the bed (maybe?) and you'd never want anything too heavy up there to come down.

I'm kinda feeling a beautiful wallpaper for the wall behind your bed? Grasscloth or something simple?

Oh, saw your post late (maybe we were posting at the same time). There are so many shades of gray bedspreads that might not match, so maybe CREAM would be best, with a bunch of gray fluffy/velvet pretty pillows, and a cute gray throw blanket?

Hi Laura :) believe it or not, yes I am still having fun with this! Lol ....the problem that I keep running into with the nightstands is that right now, I have my bed much lower than it is supposed to be, to keep it reachable and safe for my toddler. I took out the bed frame and have the mattress sitting directly on the floor, so It sits just below 20 inches, I believe. However, little ones grow so quick at this age and by next year, as she gets bigger, I’d like to put the bed back on the frame, the way it’s supposed to be. I don’t recall the measurements when it’s on the frame, but I know it is a significant difference in height. So if I buy something for the current height now, it will be too short later, and if I buy it for the future height, it will be too tall now (which I don’t like.) Plus, all the nightstands I like the most are taller. And since my current ones weren’t expensive and I do actually like them, I think it’s best to wait to get new ones, for now.
Thank you for your kind words on my wedding photos - it was a perfect day!!
I can’t imagine living where there are earthquake scares!! It’s so foreign to me!! I live in Colorado, but I’m a Floridian, so I’m used to disasters like hurricanes, where we get lots and lots of warning and time to prepare! :)

Courtney sounds like a good plan..the small mirrored ns would be adorable in a girls room down the road....but for now let’s make what you have look fabulous!

What part of Colorado do you live? My daughter lives in downtown Denver right across from the baseball stadium...she loves it...probably close to your age? 29......I am there all the time....just love it.

Courtney did you like any of the lamps I posted? Sets of two for around $112-150

I live in North Colorado Springs, so I’m just south of Denver, and we ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT HERE!!! We just moved here last summer and couldn’t be happier. It’s such a great family oriented area.
And God bless you for thinking I’m close to 29!!! Lol, I’m turning 40 this summer. Though my husband keeps me young, as he is 10 years younger than me! So your daughter and he are the same age.
I do like the lamps! I like the 2 that were in the middle of the picture and the one on the bottom left. Where did you come across them at?

Well you look so young! Like they say 40 is the new 30! I will be 59 this year and they thought of being so close to 60 is killing me!!:((

that is a great area in Colorado so beautiful....

I like both of those, but I just measured my headboard, and I think that they will be too tall. The corner of my headboard sits at 26 inches, so I’d like to stay in that range. I’m not a fan of tall lights by the bed - I find that it gives too much light into the room at night if someone is up reading.
What do you think of this one? I like the added texture of the leather, and they are 25 inches.
I should clarify that I meant that the headboard corner is 26 inches up from the nightstand

With the current set up of my room, my lap shade would have to begin at around 16 inches to be at my chin level.
What do you think of the leather look on the lamp? Would it go well with the room? Here is another one I came across
  • 7 years ago

So the tall lamp you had there is about 28-29 inches. What if it was about 27 inches

I like the leather look though

The tall lamp that I placed there from my living room was I believe around 31-33 inches, and I didn’t like the way it felt in the room.
It felt like too much of a focal point.

Just keep the base height around 16”-17” high..you should be fine...any gray lamp you love is fine..mix the shades of gray in the room for a monochromatic look...it will be beautiful.

So my husband doesn’t like the leather lamps. He likes these. He likes the mercury look.

Hi Cortney - An artist named Jacinda works at the Guiry's on County Line Road near Park Meadows mall. She is amazing on color. She also has the grays nailed. She's the best!

I like them, too. And they are 27 inches so I think they will be a good height!! Tall but not too tall.
@Crossville I had never heard of that but I just looked it up and it looks like a great store - thank you so much for the recommendation!!

Courtney, your husband has great taste! Love the mercury/silver lamps!

    Are you keeping the nightstands

    last modified: 7 years ago

Those are pretty similar to the two I have in the living room on the main floor, only it’s the upper part (kind of looks like a bowl with a silver lid) that’s mercury glass and the base is silver. We bought them at Nebraska furniture mart last fall. They look great on the side tables at each end of the sapphire blue sofa with chaise. :)

Hi Cortney how is everything going
Hi Claire! Thanks for checking in :) I haven’t done much in the last week. I’ve been kind of waiting for the perfect pieces to jump out at me. I’m getting the lamps that I posted above. And I came across this canvas print that I really like. I’ve beenIve been meaning to ask you wonderful people if you think it would work over my bed. I think the biggest size that I can get it in is 35x35.

Would not be my suggestion...modern style..mixed with contemporary bed..barn console..you need to try to pull this room together so it it cohesive...

Have you kept your ns why have you changed your mind about having your wedding pictures above your bed not saying it’s not a nice painting. How much space between ceiling and the top of bed

I didn’t necessarily change my mind about the wedding pictures over the bed - I just happened upon that picture and really liked it. It combines some of my favorite things - the mountains and the sky, with the water - my favorite surroundings - (I even named my daughters Skye and River) - my favorite colors, and it has an Impressionism feel, which is my preference for art. It has everything I love in one picture! It didn’t even occur to me to that it had a modern feel! Lol - oh well.
I do still have the nightstands. I’m keeping them for now and will replace them once I raise my bed.
