That's how it goes this time of year. We've had a few days in the 50s and hit 63 (17c) today . Amazing how fast the snow melts when that happens. I've also seen Robins and have my first Crocus coming up through the melting snow and leaves. Too early to look around much. I hope all the hostas are still sleeping. .....Wondering why I don't have any Lycoris.

Sadly even here in Florida we got cold again. One more time covering the green houses. I will be out there this weekend though. So much work to do.

it was 77 here on Feb 20th (set a record)..it makes you feel that "spring is here"..but it isn't..no daffodil blooms, wake robins or hostas..

Below freezing predicted for tonight, then 9 days of warm then the potential for frost/freeze again. I know this is normal for spring. It would be ok except for the month of warm in February when everything grew. The snow on Monday, mostly melted already, was our third snow this year. Normal is one to two. It always melts within a week or two, never stays the whole winter. DH said it was warmer in Montreal and Anchorage this morning than it was here.

so NC is colder than Alaska and Canada?..that's just not right!..my birdbath is frozen so I knew our temperature was low..it's 21..ugh..as you said awhile back - we'll probably be cutting off ugly leaves when the hostas get bigger :-(

Saija..my hostas are safe..I had just a few pips..what a fun job you have!..have you ever started seeds with your pupils?..could be a fun project..

We grow every year Easter grass. Just different craft in jar every year. Children are always excited when grass starts to grow. Glass jar in so cool, you can also study roots. And few times we have planted sunflower seed for Mothersday present. And yes I have fun job and I like very much my job.

Saija, maybe you should grow hostas with them :-) A wonderful picture of snow and blue sky, but spring seems to be so far away in Finland :-(

I remembered to go cover montana A a few minutes ago. It’s already 32F and will be below freezing until 8 am tomorrow morning. The snow is melted and the high tomorrow is 62F. What ridiculous weather. Anne, did you really have a winter with no snow except for that little bit in the pics?

This year only the early miniature Narcissi have just opened.

Karin..a good suggestion for Saija..what a great idea to start hostas from seed..

Kathy..yes we had a "brown winter"..just a few light snows..we've used the snow blower just once..and it wasn't necessary but we're retired - the blower was in the garage full of gas and ready to go so my husband used it..maybe your snow was insulation from the cold for your new hosta leaves and they'll still look good..I'm anxious to see how they do..I looked yesterday afternoon..my pips are bigger but not much..

Dave..this routine is getting old..I don't have any daffodil blooms..and very few crocus..I saw a snowdrops yesterday that was past it's prime..I never saw it when it was pretty..I love them and always intended to plant some..I don't know how this one came to be here..not likely from the previous owners..maybe this will be the last time to protect your hostas!

Beth..you're a genius..you have blooms that don't need winter protection!..

Karin, it would be fun to grow hostas with students, but one little problem: in our cold spring preschool ends before hosta pips show up, LOL. However I rather take this real cold and snowy winter than wet and dark winter that we had last year.

Zkathy: Yes in picture my students and I are skiing. Aren't they cute. We made little trip and we had packed lunch in backpack. Usually we ski or ice-skate many times in week in school area, but this time we made little longer trip.

Beth I think I need also those flowers :)

Just for fun, nicholsworth :-) I sent most seed to Dave, he has more room left than me. That was just a small rest I had kept for trying. Put them into a salad bowl with lid from a pizza delivery and kept them on the windowsill for a little more than two weeks now. May choose one of them if they survive and give it the garden name Patina :-)

Karin..just kidding haha..I've never tried starting seeds inside..I don't have shelving or lights..your success makes me want to try!..post pics of Patina if you name one..

No need for shelving or lights. I know more people who start to grow some end of February on a windowsill. Just give it a try next spring, you have room enough to fill :-)

Karin..your EEs are off to a good start!..mine were in the ground planted about 3 inches below the surface..is there space in the pot to plant them lower?..
