Digging Daffodils

last modified: 8 years ago

I wanted to move this clump of daffodils. First, I start digging several inches out from the clump.

Once I get down far enough, I rock the shovel back and forth to loosen the soil. See the fissures in the soil? I have successfully loosened it.

Because the soil is so loose at this time of year, I grab onto the leaves, wiggle and pull and out they come with a great deal of the roots intact. Ta da!

But you say - your soil is hard and difficult! Yes, mine too by June when it is often recommended to transplant. My soil will have firmed up considerably and would require to dig down much further and all around the clump. Pulling out after blooming in early summer might cause leaves to break rather than pull out the bulbs and roots. Roots will break as well at that time so a huge chunk of soil should be moved once the soil firms.

Do I lose blooms by transplanting now? Maybe a few, but I would rather transplant when the effort is minimal. HTH!
