Designing around a door??? Help!

last modified: 8 years ago

The front door of my home leads directly into my living room. What’s more, there’s really only one conceivable place to put the TV. I have no idea how to configure the furniture around these two facts! We don’t use the door regularly, but we do use it enough that I’m trying to avoid blocking it off.

I’m at a total loss here. Pictures included. Please excuse clutter. Help!

Yes, I would put the long cabinet/console under the tv and put the one that’s currently under the tv in the bay window. Is there enough room to put the sofa perpendicular to the tv wall? If so, you could mount the tv on an articulating arm to view it from the sofa. You could also, as suggested above, place 2 chairs opposite the sofa.

HI -- I just want to give you another way of looking at your room. 1 - Is your sofa the same size as the alcove where the TV is now ? So if the sofa will fit into that space but If not then I suggest you fill the alcove with shelving / bookcases and set the sofa in front of the bookcases/shelving .Or put a sofa table in there so you can have a painting above and lighting . 2 - Is there enough width of wall to the right of the front door for the TV ? If so then I think that is what you should do. Then with the sofa on the other wall and then your chairs at each end of the sofa . I am afraid there is not a good solution for the front door . The front door could be relocated if that is in the cards for you . But with the room rearranged it will work better for you. If you found a free standing furniture TV stand that has a room divider style back to it , then that could be placed shielding the view of the front door across from the sofa making an entrance for the front door . Check Ikea .

Like the bay window. Interesting space but definitely awkward to furnish.

You could probably place the cabinet that is now in the bay windows beneath the tv. (If you leave the current cabinet beneath the tv, create a pair of closets with shelves hidden behind bi-fold doors -- one on each side of it).

If the back of cabinet now (in the pic) beneath the tv has a finished look (or could be made to have a finished look), you might consider adding it at the end of the sofa with its front facing the dining area as a room divider/end table.

You could then place your wing back chair and a side table with a tall thin lamp with a white shade in the bay window.

If you can use a graph to draw the room to scale with measurements shown, you might get more help specifically with regard to the door.

You definitely shouldn't block the door -- fire hazard.

If you could add some wire/cable extensions and move the tv to the left -- to the corner where you now have your wing back chair -- and if you could remove the short wall by the pet house, would you have room for a very narrow end table or floor lamp or a lamp/table combo unit in the corner of that indent (where dog house is and still have room to turn your sofa toward the tv?

There isn't much room for anything other than a chair and table in that bay window area -- or two chairs with a floor lamp if the chairs are small.

As is, if/when you replace the sofa and still live here, consider a two-seat unit rather than a three seat one.

Your media unit is too small for TV. I would replace it with one from the bay window and move down TV.

You have so nice feature-bay windows, so make more accent on them. Hang curtains on windows and decorate side stand with plant/vases.

Your room is 50 shades of beige. And I want to bring some color.

Is that a litter box? Is there anywhere else to put it like in a laundry room or bathroom?

Lisa - That is a litter box, and we don’t have a bathroom big enough, nor do I have a laundry room - I have a stacking washer/dyer unit in a closet, with no extra space on either side unforutnately. Trust me, it wouldn't be in the living room of I could help it. The litter box was the only thing you could suggest?? lol I have a lot of other furniture pictured =)

Not to hijack, but if the litter box needs to be in the living room, there are ways to disguise it. We use one of these furniture boxes and it is a lifesaver!

auntthelma - Might be a good thing for us to register for. Thank you!

I agree to flip the two furniture pieces so that the small one is in the window and the larger one is under the TV.

Is there room behind the couch for a thin console that can act like a 'foyer' piece?

Two chairs in the window would make it look more inviting. Maybe move the wing chair over there with the smaller console and see how you like that.

auntthelma - it's a very narrow space behind the couch =/ I'm going to take some better pictures today so the space is better reflected, maybe even measurements!

I would have the sofa face the windows and put the tv there...Not ideal, but in a small room, every square inch needs to earn it's keep!

The sofa will be more toward the right (facing) to allow for a passageway and I would get a console or sofa table for behind it. It should look like a room divider...

What am I seeing in front of the recessed section on the left? It looks like a partial wall? That needs to go, or put the litter box in there for the time being.

Ultimate goal would be to have that whole thing a straight wall...what's was the reasoning for the recess? Could it have been a closet accessed from the other side?

Sorry about that. I assumed as much, but that's what stood out to me so I had to ask. I agree w/others re: switching the cabinets. Proportionally, a tv console looks better when it's longer than the tv. Considering the layout of the room, I think your couch & tv are best where they are.

Have you tried the couch against the wall instead of floating in front of it? I see you would partially block a window, but that is done all the time. You'd get a bigger, more open feeling from the room.

Lisa - no it's okay, no apologies needed! I think overwhelmingly everyone agrees to switch media consoles. I'm going to do that today and come back with new pictures =)

auntthelma - I haven't tried that because the TV would be off-center and it's not on a mount that moves. If I got an articulating mount, though, I think that would be a possibility!

Jenna, just went through this room. Looks as an idea for wall color. Yours sofa color .Look how beige and gray work together. And get new coffee table please.

Can you make a sketch of the room with dimensions and post here? There are some gifted posters here that can see possibilities but they need the dimensions to do their magic. :)

It would definitely be easier with the dimensions. Please ignore the colors.

There are so many different tv mounting options out there, I would look into one that might work for you so the sofa could be against the alcove wall. This one is designed for bedrooms so the viewing angle might be off for a sofa but I think you'll get my point about finding a mount location where a specialty mount could point the tv at the sofa regardless of where it's mounted! Good luck.

    .Or like this....

Alright, everyone, I've got some updated information and organization.

I used a room builder to reflect the general layout of the room without furniture and provided some measurements.

    Not a Pro.

    Looking good.

Do you have room enough to move the chair over to the small console by the windows?

Also move the sofa slightly over. In the direction of the dog.

It would open up the space a little.

You switched the cabinets :) They looks much better, along with all that natural light.

I was wondering the same thing about the chair.
