Fantasy Violets and Russians

Hi Irina and All,

First a question about Russians. Is it known what their secret hybridization technique is to produce such unusual, enormous varieties? Also, the petals are more full. I think the Ian series are examples of stable color, good performance, and improve each year. The colors are more striking, even if a white with a color edge.

Second on fantasies. Is there a preferred bright pink with deep blue dashes? Or are they mostly similar?

A bit of background. I am planning to get a few more Russians. I have a list of Irina's recomendations of growers from a previous topic. I will also replace some favorites.

In my environment, the Russian AVs are easy. They do well in a cooler temperature, lower light window sill. They are also the most likely to go home with admiring guests, who report years later the plants are still growing.

Re fantasies, I am now trying out a few. I got them from LLG in the above color combo, as that company seems to offer a big selection. That color combo seemed like a novelty or variation that I postponed investigating, that I can now turn my attention to. Joanne

I have LE Zagadka. It's one of my top loves. I just put down a leaf since it's so damn pretty. Forgot where I got it. Must be from Poland.

Omg, Julie, what is the requirements to purchase from overseas? Did you need any certificate? You bought the plant or the leaf? Any picture of the flower? Thanks

Shipping at your risk. Phytocertificates are so expensive.. nobody will agree. The damage is mostly done by long time in shipping. It can come fast - or slow.

    Elsa,

I bought the starter plants. They came in very good shape. It took 2-3 weeks, but no guarantee like Irina said. I also bought leaves several times. Most came in good condition but one came after 1.5 months and of course all rotted. But the seller said I could email him when he starts selling leaves again in spring to resend them to me again.

I will remember to take a photo when I got home.

I looked on the internet for a pic. It was offered on Ebay from Poland last year for $13.50 plus postage.

I just Google the certificate price. The buyer had to pay 100 dollar?

Different price in different countries - or even in US - each state has its own fee.

    Beautiful!

If seller said he can't provide phytocertificate. Buyer pay for the item and shipping only. It mean mostly the AV will be forfeited at the custom?

We are pretty far below on a customs list... there are much more dangerous items they check for... x-ray and use dogs to sniff. Praise the Lord for their efforts! You have 100 times more chances to lose your shipment to delay. But it can happen - so it is at your own risk,

NY only charges several $ for phyto, CO - $62 - and the whole day wasted. I tried to get phyto in Sweden - they only have it for big semi trucks filled with sales plants - and it cost $1000. Phyto is not required for the countries of EU. In some countries - obtaining the phyto will bring the tax inspector to your doors.
