Need rug ideas

Hello garden web design geniuses,

I'm in dire need of a new rug. The present rug is an 8x10 flat woven cotton and not easy to clean (needless to say)... I purchased it six years ago before acquiring a child! He and my husband have pretty much destroyed the cream stripes. I dearly love it, but it needs to go. The size, when the rug is properly placed, is an OK size--all of the furniture can have its front legs on the rug. Since I'm hunting for a new rug, though, I'm not going to bother moving it right now.

Current living room (please forgive the toy disaster and again, I'm aware the rug needs to be shifted further to the left, but since I'm hunting for a new one, I'm ignoring the matter for the moment):

So, I'm on the hunt for a new 8x10 rug (or larger--but $$$$). I'm not sure if I want to stick with the black and white palette, which I love, or if I want to go more traditional, like with an imitation persian rug or something like that. Major bonus with ruggable--these are washable rugs! They get great reviews. (Has anyone used this company?)

I'm actually open to other ideas as well. Budget is a concern--I'd prefer not higher than the $386 on Ruggable's largest rugs, which are 8x10. Of course I can get much cheaper on Amazon, but I don't even know where to start... I guess it must be said that the next rug needs to hide stains (sigh) and/or be washable, like Ruggable, or super easy to clean. I'd like to avoid synthetic rugs that off-gas for a lot of reasons, mainly that I'm a migraine sufferer whose migraines are triggered by off-gassing, but I am not able to spend a thousand bucks on a rug.

Here are some rugs I am drawn to. Thoughts?

I realize there is a range here. If I could, I’d keep the same style of rug I have (I did find a savafieh version on Amazon), but it just isn’t practical for us right now.

The Ruggable rugs sound perfect for you and your situation. Nice price too. A lot of them look nice in your room. My favorite is the Patchwork Boho:)

Wow, thank you so much! I love your photoshops! They help me visualize possibilities in a much more effective and realistic way, which has been my problem so far.

I am just not sure what to do. I love the peaceful atmosphere created by my limited palette—I’m honestly not sure how much I want to expand it. Or maybe I’m just a commitment-phobe. :)

My other hesitation is that I already have a really nice rug pad so a less expensive option would actually be a non-Ruggable rug, as much as I LOVE the idea of a washable rug—-LOVE!

Question for anyone reading this—is my current 8x10 rug large enough or do I need 9x11 or 9x12?

    You guys are amazing!!!

Wow, I have a lot to consider. Well—one thing is certain. I feel better about ditching my old rug now!

I wonder how stain resistant and durable those Ruggable rugs really are. I’d hate to spend almost $400 on a rug (a lot of money to me!) only to be in the same position in a couple of years. I’ll gladly do it if I know it will last. Maybe I need to start a separate thread or do a search on GW.

Celerygirl, I love those as well, especially seeing them in the room! Seeing all of your mockups makes me really want to consider lightening up on the rug.

Kjoy and celerygirl, I’m most appreciative of your efforts in scooting my rug over!

You have so many great options- hard decision. Just wanted to 2nd polypropylene-I got one from sealed rugs & its bullet proof.

Also, I've always liked this from IKEA-$299. Similar to your original rug.

Hello peppapoodle, do polypropylene rugs off-gas badly? I am very sensitive to that and I hate exposing my kid to it as well. Of course it could happen with any rug, I realize. I haven’t seen any reviewers mention off-gassing as an issue on the Ruggable site though.

I love that IKEA rug as well! If my local store hadn’t been out of stock when I was ready to buy, i would have it now. This one is from Crate and Barrel circa 2011 or so.

Peppapoodle, where did you find your rug? I fully admit I’ve only looked at amazon and Ruggable.

    I truly can't remember about a smell.

I mentioned the IKEA one bc you said you still loved your rug.

But, I got mine at esale rugs after Aktillery got one. I'm sure this isn't what your looking for--they have tons of different styles. Free shipping/returns.

indoor/outdoor are easy to clean and all cotton can be thrown in a commercial washer, unless you have an extra large. I have always had children-fuzzy and messy hubby. I always get very expensive and just toss or clean and donate to pups when too stained, so keep it cheap and you can.

I’m going to look at esale now! Thank you both. I think I may go with a poly rug since I already have a really nice pad and I’ve done a board search and see that people really like their poly rugs, and have even washed them in their driveways!

Havingfun, my main issue is my husband and his coffee and wine. We have rules about eating only at the kitchen counter, so it really isn’t my kid.

wow, I am totally overwhelmed by esale! I have never see n such an insane collection.

Unfortunately, it's confusing me. I find myself drawn to stuff like this . But this would be a mistake in my smallish room, yes?

Looks like it might go great with your artwork!

I do have a family member who is an amazing visual artist and we have her work throughout our home, so in some ways, yes, it would pick up on all of that. I just don't want to buy a huge rug and regret it or get tired of it.

I have two polypropylene rugs from esalerugs plus a hand-knotted one. There is very little off-gassing from the poly's, and keeping the windows open as much as possible for a few days should take care of any problems.

I think you should go with what you instinctively like because otherwise there will be regrets later. The one that celerygirl says is her favorite looks very good in your space because it actually makes it look much larger and complements everything you have very nicely.

This is one of my poly's from esalerugs and I've been very satisfied with it. You can hose them off outside, although I haven't done it to this one, in spite of the cat upchucking on it several times.

    Here's the second one.

ah the cats--they are good at upchucking. I have a cat also, although he hasn't contributed to the stains on this particular rug. :)

Love your rugs! I'm just so overwhelmed by that esale site's massive inventory. ugh!

(And thank you for the info on off-gassing, Ingrid! I got very sick as a kid from new carpet in our house and my parents didn't believe me at all. Since becoming an adult--and an ever-increasingly chronic migraineur--I've avoided synthetic materials and fragrance as much as possible, but I'm thinking it's gonna have to be a poly rug. Glad to know it doesn't seem to be an issue!)

The only four cream poly rugs from esale are posted below. Unfortch. Most are cream and beige which is not what I want—I want cream with grey as an accent. Of course my search methods could be faulty...

There were some indoor-outdoor ones that I omitted since I can’t touch them/feel first.

It's overwhelming & I didn't mean to send you down a rabbit hole!!

This is why I just copied Aktillery's rug:) Imitation is a form of flattery!!

I love your room, furnishings and the wonderful light from your windows. Really, you can do no wrong. I see the gray/creams, bulk/white, or even more vibrant , but not muddy colors. No help, but thoughts......

You can also try overstock.com and e-bay. Well, maybe not today or you may run screaming from the house, and family will wonder what the heck just happened. Give yourself a little time and the right rug will come along.

be careful with overstock they get many complaints and most of their stuff can be had other places for less.

no i do not think there is a problem with your wild choice.

I first met this guy while working with a water colorist. I thought noway. but she believed in it and in the end it went wonderful with all her many colored paintings.

Im sorry, my son was very neat. Not so the hubby or kitties and puppies. so i understand perfectly.

I like a lot of all modern rugs.

lots of great ideas and sharing here. I keep gravitating to the first and mostly the last one of the ruggable post . (cant quite tell the colors for the last one is it blue or black. if it's blue I like it more) I also like the first one of the beigey where you want grey esale rugs.

Having fun, I love that rug! I will probably end up getting a light-colored neutral rug since it’s such a investment, relatively speaking. Sheila, thanks for the feedback! It’s just so overwhelming.

Peppapoodle, no worries! It’s a great website with a ton of options. At some point I will go for it, but likely only after posting a bunch more possibilities! I’m so grateful for this board.

    purr i am confused, 5x8 is $99?

I need an 8x10 at least—that’s what is in there now. (Also which rug are you referring to? The Ruggable rugs are cheap with just the topper but you nedd their specific pad which is way more money—an 8x10 was about $380 IIRC.)

Once you know which rug you want, google the name and search shopping, and then you can compare all the websites that offer it for the best price.

Here is your trellis rug from esalerugs. Trellis will look good. Just need to adjust a color.

I would go with light but muted one.

You guys are just amazing at this, thank you!!

I love all of these choices.

A rug with a mix of colors would hide stains when a lighter color rug might not. Also, when we purchased our rug, we tried several and went with sites with generous return policies and shipping coverage. Totally worth it.

Hello J Corn, do you happen to remember which sites had the best return policies?

    last modified: 8 years ago

    Esale rugs have free returns.

Some Companies offer free samples.. All companies require to return items within a return window- in my experience about 30 days or sooner.

Amazon often accepts returns for free..I've had great experiences with them. You simply print out the (usually pre-paid) return label and return. You can even print them out at UPS,.

If you buy from a 3rd party seller there, click on the name to see the return policy.

Based on what I found online,https://ruggable.com/pages/returns-and-exchanges Ruggable charges a $10, $15 or $20 restocking fee.

Wayfair has always charged me a return fee except when some towels arrived damaged. I was shocked at the high return fees. Thank goodness I didn't try to return a vanity -one which I luckily love. I wasn't aware of their return policy then.

This seems to their policy: https://wayfair.knoji.com/questions/what-is-wayfairs-return-refund-exchange-policy/

Overstock.com . You may pay return shipping. If you still like stripes, Chilewich.com will send free samples. Returns are not free. Their rugs are more indoor/outdoor type but we have ours in a bathroom and I find it feels fine on my feet...it is not however, a rug made for a soft and cozy feel. But practical and durable..can't be beat.

i don't tend to return things often. They have to be defective, very inaccurately described, a complete miss in the color description, etc. That doesn't happen much. Maybe I've been lucky.

Thanks J Corn! I’d LOVE to not return something but just in case like to know it won’t be cost prohibitive.

Ok, here’s another possibility from Amazon. Thoughts? Is this pattern too small? It’s polypropylene and a good price for an 8x10.

Kjoy, that blue rug is gorgeous. I have just never been a blue person. I don’t know why. Maybe I should just go for it!!
