Coffee Table Help!

I purchased this 42.5x42.5 inch coffee table for $80 from a local family. It is in great condition so I jumped on it because I thought it was a steal considering the size. However, I’m now wondering if it is outdated and am unsure if it works in my guest room/office. Can someone estimate when this table might have been popular and if this style is currently in?!
Also, I’m open to suggestions on how to update it for a DIY project. It is wood with 4 glass tops and a rattan/wicker bottom. I would love to make it lighter...

Some inspiration, these are painted with Annie Sloan chalk paint

I see a rattan stool in the room. Since you mentioned DIY - I'd try stripping off the old finish and sanding it down to the bare wood. Chances are, the wood will be much lighter. Seal the wood natural. Don't touch the rattan at all. I think the contrast of the two woods would look light and airy.

Looks like a piece from Thomasville or similar furniture maker, which was popular in the 70’s/80’s. The era has nothing to do with being “dated”, it is still useful and pretty good quality. You couldn’t buy a new table for $80.00.

Is that your dhurrie rug? Irene’s suggestion of painting the piece is perfect. How about choosing a color from the rug?

Maybe some pics of the guest room but IMO that coffee table was ugly in the 70’s and still is and way too big to move around if you have a sofa bed in the guest room

I also think it was unattractive it its heyday, 80s? But I can see painting it and changing glass from smooth to a textured or painting the back of the existing glass in one of the colors in your room, hopefully a pastel. This kind of table is perfect for a DIY project. I also prefer small coffee tables so if space is at a premium in this room, doubt it would be my choice.

My friend still has the sofa table that matches. I think her kids broke a glass or two on the coffee table. Put it on Craig's List for $85 and see it gone. You need one smaller and movable if guests sleep on a sofa bed.

I like it! As is. But if you want to change it up, cut a piece of plywood the size of the top. Pad it. And then cover it with fabric that coordinates with your rug, etc. In other words, turn it in to an Ottoman! You can screw the plywood to the top off the table from the bottom up, to secure it. You could also replace the glass with tiles of the same size. But I really like the way it looks. As is!

Just to add to ptreckel’s great diy suggestion, add casters to the legs so the “ottoman” could be easily moved.
Also, why not purchase some baskets or trays for the bottom shelf so the things that get put on the bottom shelf don’t poke holes in the caning.
