Repoting rhodies

Here in my country (Serbia) its sead that when you buy a rhodie and you want to repot it in begger pot, roots need to be splited or separeted from the tight clump for better nutrient absortion and propper root developement, and if you dont do that the plant will die in 2-3 years. Is this to be truth? Sorry for bad grammar.
