I agree with the Pecan Pie for Texas. It's definitely the most popular dessert in my part of Texas. The last time I checked, this area was 75% Hispanic, and my guess is that hasn't changed much in the last 15 or so years. I have never seen Flan offered in any restaurant here or in neighboring towns. And in my 40+ years here, I've only ever met one person who made it. Pecan Pie is EVERYwhere! There is a number of deserts on that list I want to try!

Kansas is caramel corn? Why, because there's so much corn in Kansas? Nope, not a fav in Kansas from my family there. Looks like desserts in other states were also picked based solely on what is often or mostly grown there (Idaho: Spudnuts). Texas, yes, family there eats plenty of pecan pie. Lived in KY briefly, so yes on the peanut butter fudge. Nevada... vanilla cupcakes? Nope. New Mexico, I ate a lot of flan, but mostly sopapillas with honey (yum!) so I'm gonna say a reserved 'no'. Have lived in Tennessee for a long while now, and no to moon pies. More pecan pie and pumpkin here from what I know.

Well, every tourist trap in Michigan sells fudge, the Mackinac Island tourists are even referred to by residents as "fudgies". And we do grow cherries, a lot of them. So.....maybe.

I think cherry pie would be more representative of the entire state, whereas the fudge thing is mostly restricted to the tourist areas.

NJ - saltwater taffy, absolutely but only if you live in that area. Most of the desserts I remember from NJ were either from my Jewish side or Italian side, and those were dependent on the time of year.

Florida - Key Lime pie, again, absolutely if you're just looking at part of the state. I'm sure the state's Hispanic community would give you some options. And I agree, that's some store-bought Key Lime pie, not very original.

Colorado - well, we're only here 8 months so far, but if you make that Mug Brownie with cannabutter, you can count me in.

Massachusetts got it right with the Boston Creme Pie!

But Virginia's Lemon Chess Pie threw me off!

Pennsylvania should probably be shoo-fly pie. I don't think of whoopie pies as a dessert. They're a snack (not one that tempts me).

I was surprised to see cornmeal in the filling of Virginia's Lemon Chess Pie.

ETA--Lemon bars are really, really popular here in WI. Every pot luck you ever go to have from one to five pans of lemon bars. Totally OK with me because I love them and hate the ordeal of juicing lemons & picking out the seeds to make my own.

I was surprised Washington wasn't represented by an apple or wild blackberry dessert (since we are the top apple producer in the USA), but see Oregon has both those fruits assigned to represent them. I would think of something made with hazelnuts would better represent Oregon, since they are a top producer of those little gems.

Nanaimo Bars for WA? Seems a little too Canadian for us to claim those as our top dessert, although they are a popular potluck dessert item. And delicious, so thanks B.C.!

Whipped cream cheese frosting for California?? Never heard of it or seen it, and I do not think it is a dessert on its own. I think a fruit tart (with lemon curd) would be more appropriate. However, when I worked in a restaurant baking desserts, the most popular thing I made was double chocolate brownies.

Maybe something almond based for California. Or Pistachio ice cream. I've driven through pistachio orchards on the way to Sacramento.

I agree that Pecan Pie is appropriate for Texas, having grown up there with a pecan orchard.

@lars -- I agree -- whipped cream cheese frosting? That is just bizarre. Almonds, pistachios, walnuts or even strawberry. Another online ranking suggests Meyer Lemon cake... another, olive oil cake... yet another suggests Froyo

I live in Kansas and THAT is not a favorite of Kansas! Caramel corn -- it's not even a dessert -- it's a snack. If I had to name a Kansas dessert -- I would say pie -- you'll find it at every church potluck, auction, and fundraising dinner -- you can pick the flavor of your choice! Perhaps pecan as well because SE Kansas is known for it's pecan groves.

I also was born and raised in Missouri and although we lived on the west side of the state -- Gooey Butter Cake is known throughout the US as a St. Louis dessert. Although I've never made it, I've probably eaten it and at least it really has some connection to Missouri unlike the Kansas caramel corn!

I gotta agree with Martha Scott, caramel corn is not a dessert, and I wouldn't consider Nebraska's cream cheese mints, New Jerseys's salt water taffy (we have a taffy maker here, but it's candy, not a desert in my mind) a dessert either. There are a few other's that seem far more candy-like to me (buckeye's), etc.

Adding to the states I've lived: Colorado and mug brownies...? Peach pie and cobbler were more common when I lived there. And Oklahoma, sure don't remember that concoction! I do remember lots of delicious apple cobblers.

I'd be disappointing if I went on a road trip and had to stick to candy's as my only dessert. I think this is more someone's 'idea' of what they want to be a State's most favored dessert, rather than a true depiction of what one would commonly find as a favorite in homes and restaurants in those states.

Saltwater taffy for New Jersey? only if you live in Ocean County. How about huckleberry pie? Or neapolitan ice cream.....and Iowa? Jello cake?? Rhubarb crisp would be more fitting...or caramel corn.

There isn't a monoculture in California where any one thing would represent the whole state, but I'd feel comfortable saying "ice cream" for the state dessert. It was endemic long before the big surge in ice cream sales in the last quarter of the 20th C. There's ice cream everywhere, even in the North, where the temperatures are cooler.

What flavor you ask? 31! Baskin-Robbins are from the L.A. area, and every local ice cream stand or shop had at least a dozen flavors when I was small, and people bought several flavors at a time at the supermarket to keep at home Even the soft serve stand at the discount store had 3-5 flavors, plus a few hard shell dips. As many kinds of ice cream at once as languages are spoken (at least!). That truly represents California.

Lars is right that we grow a lot of pistachios and almonds, but nut desserts aren't really emblematic of the state. Pistachio ice cream is but one of the many. ;) We have also always had a huge dairy economy, which is more support for ice cream.

There used to be a lot of ice cream trucks. Some are still on the road. There are also street vendors. And paleta vendors (Mexican style frozen fruit pops).

Yup. Ice cream and ice cream adjacent, in all the flavors and colors of the rainbow. That's California!

I recently found Mamey paletas in gas stations to and from Sacramento, and they were fantastic. There are a lot of paletas I like, but I associate them more with Mexico, although they do make a lot in California now. Other favorite paleta flavors include mango, guanabana, coconut, and cantaloupe. In fact, cantaloupe used to be my all time favorite - until I found mamey.

Ice cream in general reminds me more of Texas and the South than it does of California, but I lived through a lot more heat in Texas, and in California I've always lived close enough to the beach that the weather was temperate in the summer.

I'm not positive I would agree with Mexican Wedding Cookies for Arizona, but I guess its a better fit then something like pie, for AZ!
