knee trembling- Whetstone Garden

Oh my goodness. You know that moment when you first see a rose, and the breath leaves your body? "What. Is. That?!" I was peeking at last year's gallica photo share thread, and drooling over everyone's roses. Then Paul has to go and share his roses, and thanks goodness my bottom was already on the couch. Because holy! What a rose that Whetstone Garden is. Why is this rose not in every garden center nation wide? How did I not know this existed?! You all know I have a tiny little (gigantic enormous) thing for Gallicandy, and apparently this is it's baby?

https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/4671653/gallica-photo-share-anyone?n=146

Go look. Drool. Wonder. (ps which of my offspring do I need to offer up to get a sucker from this plant?!) I need to make that all Barden bed in my side yard... hrmmm.

Karen, I completely agree with you on WG. But I love many of Paul's roses. They are just so dang hard to find! I'm angry (and less socially acceptable synonyms) that there aren't more commercial sources. The same for Kim Rupert's roses. Some of Kim's roses are more easily purchased in Europe than here!

Rook, Marianne, Gallicandy, Dakota Redwing, Jeri Jennings, Whetstone Garden...they should ALL be classics on every rose nursery's list.

    Grrrrr.

    John

EDIT: after reading Ingrid's post below, I thought it might help to let everyone know that Paul's photos of Whetstone Garden are about 1/3 of the way down on the post Karen linked to. Here's wishing Happy Drooling to all...

'Whetstone Garden' is one of my favorite "end period" roses. It has not appeared in any nursery's inventory because 1) not one nursery has ever requested propagation material and 2) I was poised to send this to Rogue Valley, but it was at a time when my relationship with RVR was becoming strained, so I declined to send it.

As far as I know, it does not sucker, but I should go check to be sure.....

And thanks, I am glad you like it. :-)

I was reading that thread just the other day. I'm always reading the older threads, anything on the Gallica or any of the other old European roses. They are my favorites , as you all know! Love all of Paul's roses I've gotten so far!

Bless you Paul, you have one heck of a way with the Gallica/Austin crosses. I'm not one to tell a hybridizer what to do with his plants... those are your babies and I adore them ever so much. If I had a mail order rose nursery, I would be requesting all of the cold hardy Bardens. Just every single one. Not just because, wow they are gorgeous, but we Northern Gardeners need more easy to plant and care for roses, especially ones that miss the dreaded Japanese Beetle season.

I've met the ever so delightful David Zlesak, out of U of W River Falls. Just a charming gentlemen, working on hybridizing out my way, and we carry a few of his babies at my place of work, which are propagated and distributed by Bailey Nurseries (They seem to do well getting his stuff out in front of the public). I know he is also a huge fan of your work (because when I meet rose hybridizers, I gush over their stuff, and then gush over yours). An idle thought on a snowy chilly morning here.

Whetstone Garden is a really lovely and special rose. I'd never heard of it but it was worth scrolling down the linked thread to find it.

Yes x1000! I know just from the forum folks alone you'd see them fly "off the shelves".

Oh my goodness, ‘Whetstone Garden’ is incredibly beautiful! ‘Gallicandy’ has always been the P.B. rose that I’ve lamented not being able to grow here the most, followed closely by ‘Marianne’. Now that I’ve seen ‘Whetstone Garden’, I’ll have to add that one to my list of Paul Barden’s I’ll have enjoy from afar......... What a beauty! You have produced some amazing roses, Paul. You’ve certainly made my little world a more enjoyable place. I suspect I’m not the only one that feels this way. Not one single rose gives me more pleasure than ‘Mel’s Heritage’. I thank you for that. Lisa

YES, WORTH CONSIDERING!!!! We cross posted. I hope there will be some warm climate roses, as well. If you do the EBay thing, please make sure we know about it! (I guess that you would, but I’m really excited about this.) I wonder if CA would be a shipping problem? Lisa

Ummm...Paul, the question isn't whether there would be enough interest. The first question is...can you propagate enough, and then whether the winners of the auctions would dare let anyone else here know, for fear of being shunned and banished, lol. Jealousy is a terrible thing!

Maaaaybe Etsy? So there’s no blood spilt over the roses? Except the kind they draw themselves... lol. I think Paul getting some roses propagated and sold, in whatever manner, sounds like an amazing thing! I’m hoping to see some more Barden beauties pop up in pics this year, from everyone’s gardens! My Marianne is still sitting out in the bed, being shielded by my windbreaker. (Darn wabbits...)
