My church does most of its communicating through FB. I am on FB for that reason. Just use your common cents about things and you'll be fine.

Ha ha, that is too funny. There are a lot of pages on Facebook that use 'tips' like this to harvest likes and then sell their pages for profit. Yay, the new economy. <eye roll>

I see these adds ALL the time with mandarins and lemons on instagram (don’t judge - I use it to search for recipes). Clearly they monitor my internet usage, due to the shear number of citrus advertisements I see. Most of the pictures are obviously fake, but it’s annoying none the less.

Google this: "plant them in a flowerpot" and you will see that †his is all over the Internet.

Facebook and Snapchat stocks have gone down because of things like this. They sell ads space to people who sell it to other guys which than advertise whatever nonsense which is not regulated by facebook or snapchat or any other social media. To a certain degree, I agree with poncirus on the common sense... the problem is common sense is not as common as they say.

Oh goodness I see these from time to time on facebook too! "Plant a lemon seed and have fresh lemons year round!" included is always a very mature dwarf lemon tree that is def grown in a greenhouse hahahaha!!

I had a really good laugh, they give misleading information and put fire in people's heart :) Half of the fruit is not even growing on that tree probably.

Too much citrus can be a problem, though I doubt the flower pot bit, see the photo of one of my in ground Satsuma trees from December below (I have 6 more though 4 are much smaller). The problem is I still buy grocery store citrus in the off season.

John, I don't know why you are blaming Facebook in particular. False advertising to create false hope in products has been around for a LONG time. Look at some of the less-than-reputable online Nurseries, Plant catalogs, E-Bay, etc. If someone is willing to pay for an ad, someone else will publish it. Then, there's PhotoShop, which is used a LOT to alter colors, etc. Just look at some of the purple and blue plumeria blooms on EBay. LOL!

There's nothing new under the sun. Same tactics, different medium.

That said, here are some shots of my potted mandarins. So the OP's photo is not all that far off. If that is not a doctored photo, it is likely carrying way too many fruit for one season, and it likely will not produce fruit the next, since it will go into alternate-year bearing. But 'You will not buy tangerines again' would only be true if you have lots of varieties with differing ripening times.

Of course, there's always been false advertising. It's just that now it's also shared as viral content, part of a larger money-making schemes that traffic in likes.

I was trying to think where I saw John's photo... and yes... Amazon Canada has people selling these trees.... but they're actually seeds.... and who knows if the seeds are any good or not but they definitely will not give you such a small tree loaded with sooo many ripe fruit. The only way it may by true is if they were to cut a branch off a mature tree and plant it in the ground and take a picture right away.... Even so, some pictures like Vladimir are just too perfect to be real.

Of course the picture I posted is that of a fake tree.

I also saw that they are selling Meyer lemon seeds on Amazon. Problem is that they do not breed true so who knows what the trees will be like? And they won't produce fruit for 5 years or probably more.

The internet is a 'Wild, Wild West' sort of place. Incredibly hard to regulate everyone trying to sell something. And should it be regulated? If so, how?

Facebook has some good uses, re Steve's comment, but as soon as I found out they share your friend's friends with you as possible friends, I thought that was an overreach of privacy. It's one thing for you to tell me who all your friends are but another thing entirely for a second party to tell me who all your friends are.
