Had 6 inches of snow on Monday . Today I found 11 pips coming up on SAGAE. Tooo early!! Here in Colorado.

11? Here’s a pic of my five year old Sagae coming up.

One pip. It’s been one pip for five years. I’m digging it up this year. It’s in prime real estate and something else can try it’s luck there.

Kathy..it seems like you've given that hosta time to "take off"..I was reading to see if I could figure out why there's just one pip for five years now..I couldn't find an answer..some possibilities that I read..not enough water? (I know you have drip irrigation but NC has drought..maybe the drip can't keep up?)..root competition?..lack of sun?..voles?..planted too deeply?..needs fertilizer?..will be interesting to see what happens in a new location..

Kathy, can you tolerate another season without digging it up? It's one of those that take several years to take off for some. Mine increased between year 5-7 if it's any consolation. If you can't stand it, replant it somewhere in more sun where it can gain some vigour. It may get a bit crispy, or not but its worth trying. At this rate you have nothing to lose. There isn't much to set it back, is there so worth a shot, maybe?

Jo..that's a lot of years to wait for maturity!..good to know..I was reading and reading to find an answer..but I don't know!..my neighbor added a drip irrigation system since I've lived here..and she's complained to me that she still has to water!..they've readjusted and I haven't talked to her about it in a long time..not sure of the current situation..but that's why I suggested a water issue..but Kathy's hosta could have plenty of water for all I know..

It might be a coin toss on digging it up. I’ll look for vole runs and that will decide it. Sorry about hijacking the thread.

I've also struggled with Sagae. I've had one for ten years now and after being eaten by rabbits or deer for three years in a row, I finally potted it up. It took at least four years more before it increased any amount. It has several shoots now but doesn't seem to get big and full like others I've seen. I did get another four years ago that as of last year hasn't increased any but the leaf and stalk size are much better than the first one. I have enough room so I just wait them out.

So 3 of you (Kathy, Jo and old_dirt) had slow Sagaes..good to know..

Sagae is definitely worth the wait IMO ! ;-)

It’s alright, I enjoy hearing yalls stories. I got a few Sagae this year and hope they do well. I love the upright look, especially since these are so far away in the yard.. I think they will look great. I just hope they take off better than I’m hearing.

nichols, I have a couple pips that are larger but it seems they all grew overnight.. and fast, my elgens actually has a leaf about 2” wide already. I didn’t see any Patriot pips today, but I still have time to see.

Sorry to brag, but my SAGAE here in Colorado has 21 pips showing. Now I just have to keep them from freezing!!

sunnywood, wow, 21 pips on Sagae! I would jump with joy :-) It's always so good to see them grow in spring. I noticed just one on a Sagae that had problems last year and it makes me happy,too.

Well it seems like my Patriots and Minutemen have not returned this year ;( August Moon, Halcyon and Elgens are all up and looking good.

I know someone had put up a link to a research page that was done in Louisiana I think.. I believe it was Ken, but i cannot find it in any of my old posts. Does anyone have that link or something similar to help me with what new additions may do well in my area.

The guy that runs Shady Characters Nursery in Aiken told me they've tried Patriot and Minuteman several times and it's too warm for them to come back that far south. They do survive for me but grow very slowly.

The ones that come from Plantaginea do well in warmer climates. They also have fragrant blooms, which is one way to tell a plant has Plantaginea in its background.

Patriot (2015) and Minuteman (2016) have also been major disappointments for me so far. (Spartanburg). Both have gone backward since I first planted them. But, looks like they may make a little progress this year. If not, time to stick them back in pots and replace them with something else. Both tend to be late risers for me, although they're both already up this year. Yours may still come up.

Out of 5 Patriots I planted at our house in Powdersville (west of Greenville) in 2011, one grown and is a big plant. I've got 3 others that are still 2-5 eyes. One of them bit the dust.

Contrast that with something out of Plantaginea like Guacamole, which gets, bigger every year.

Yes whitewater, that’s exactly it. It doesn’t have a very large list but it was nice to see some good research for helping on my next purchases. I found some Curly Fries and Pilgrim at my nursery but haven’t looked them up yet.. have you had any experience with those ?

I don't have either of those. Do you have Guacamole, Fragrant Bouquet, and their sports yet? (Stained Glass, Cathedral Windows, Avocado, Fried Green Tomatoes, Mojito, Fried Bananas, etc.) They all have Plantaginea in their background and seem to do well in warmer climates.

June and Halcyon have also done really well for me and make pretty plants.

No I don’t but thanks for the list ! I found guacamole today so i will probably go back and get that. I’ll google more about Plantaginea sports too. I do have Halcyon and it has leaved out so hopefully that will do well for me. It is my only blue

My Sagae is also a pathetic single eye for many years. I moved it once in hopes that it would do better but no... if it fails to produce more than one eye this year, it’s gone.
