I haven't heard of any of those and they all sound exotic. I have Gilda, which is thought to be Geschwind's Orden. I haven't had it long enough to say much. In the short time I've had it it has shown great vigor and is bs resistant. It had a lot of buds last spring but many failed to open , some had vegetative centers, and some were not shaped well. I wrote it off to immaturity of the plant. We'll see. But a few blooms were lovely and I've seen wonderful pics on hmf of it. I have it on a large arbor.

I don't have problems with blackspot so can't comment on that, but have nice things to say about 'Futtacker Schlingrose'. This is growing in full sun with no summer water, heavy clay soil, in other words a specific kind of situation and one most roses don't do well in. It's shrubby, a good grower, healthy, nice bloom, strongly colored, no fragrance that I recall, and just generally a nice plant to have around, especially among ramblers because of the large blooms and the color, as so many ramblers are pale. I don't know any of the others.

erasmus, I was actually considering Gilda as well and would love to follow how it is growing for you. It's a huge plus that it doesn't have BS, besides of course being beautiful as on your photo, but I wonder why many buds fail to open and hope it will not be persistent.

Melissa, I am so happy to hear about your 'Futtacker Schlingrose' because it's on my "short" short list. It would get some shade here but I am very much encouraged that it doesn't mind clay and that you confirm its strong coloring. I'm glad that I can narrow down the choice now.

I'm not sure why Geschwind ramblers are not more widely grown... I surely would love to add a couple of them to my garden. Thank you both so much!

Errata: two of my Geschwinds are grafted, Erinnerung an Brod and Nordlandrose I. Gruss an Teplitz was also grafted, the normal thing in commerce in Europe.

Marianne, your Geschwinds are amazing. Wow, now I want them all! I was supposed to narrow them down, but how could I do it after seeing these photos? That makes it a tough choice!

Well, my space is much more limited so I guess, besides Futtacker Schlingrose, I would go with the one that probably takes less space than others. It looks like it would be Corporal Johann Nagy.

Sorry to hear that Chuck took over your Gruss an Teplitz. I've planned to get it as well but I was recently searching for antique/older hardy ramblers and, to my surprise, didn't find too many available in the US or not as many as found in the catalogues from the earlier periods. That brought me to Geschwind and, the more I was reading about his roses, the more I thought that they deserve a much greater presence in our gardens. Scent is not their forte, but quite a few are real gems with many other qualities and your photos so nicely illustrate it.

Your garden is such an enchanting place and I'm glad that Geschwinds are a happy part of it. Thank you so much for sharing it all.

Oh, my goodness, I've just seen again the photos of 'Erinnerung an Brod' and have no idea how I forgot about it. Such a rich purple-mauve color, looks like a wonderful climbing gallica. From what I understand, both should be nicely scented.

I think Gruss an Teplitz is sold by a few nurseries here, something not to be taken for granted, especially after reading how it's not easy to find it in Sweden.

I'll add another favorite, Aurelia Liffa, a setigera hybrid. It doesn't like humidity but in my usually dry summers it behaves. I don't know if its available in the US? I never see it mentioned here.

mariannese, it's a beautiful rose nonetheless. From what I understand, a good number of Geschwind's roses that are in commerce today are not true to their original. I found it helpful that HMF annotates each of his roses with the findings from an Austrian rosarian, who specializes in Geschwind, on its originality as sold today.

vesfl, I totally agree that Marianne's garden is an enchanting place with magical roses adding so much to its enchantment.

On HMF, is another lovely garden featuring the sumptuous Erinnerrung an Brod. This garden is in Denmark, I believe, and is featured on the second page of photos of EaB. The underplantings are especially charming.....Sheila, I hope you share photos of your Geschwind roses. I wish I had the room for them. Diane

Diane, thank you for pointing to that garden, it's a sheer delight. The owner writes that "EaB really brings a good atmosphere to the garden" and it surely comes across that way through photos too. I see lovely lavenders, foxgloves, penstemons... together with nearby roses, all are wonderful companions to EoD, bringing out the overall look of exquisite taste and charm.

I'll put in my 2 cents for Erinnerung an Brod. Mine is own root and has never had a speck of BS or PM. The fragrance depends on the weather. She's in the wrong place and wants to block a path, but I really don't want to move it. I'd rather move the path.

Geschwinds Orden didn't make it through it's first winter here, but that had to be my fault because that rose is hardy to zone 4.

Diane, after looking at those HMF pics I think I need to move EaB after all so she can spread out. I've been trying to keep her confined to an obelisk.

That is my one and only photo of that rose, Diane. I will be better about taking photos this year. I had another EaB, but voles ate her roots away. She had more of a tendency to climb but I think this one would be happy as a shrub. I keep going back to those HMF pics. I also like the photos of her long canes supported by the branches of a pine. She'd be good to grow with a conifer for support because she's shade tolerant. Yep, got her at Northland.

Vesfl, the one I lost to voles only got mid day sun and bloomed just as well as the one in full sun.

That's wonderful, flowers, that EaB tolerates, better yet does well in some shade. I checked Northland, and they don't have EaB this year. I'm so disappointed. I decided that since she can tolerate shade, I might have a spot for her. Oh, well. I've got my hands so full (and punctured) with pruning now. You'll be happy to know the Augusta Luise looks great, and was pruned today (not one bit of cane damage). She'll be starting off larger than last year, after the awful winter of 2017. Diane

Diane, I'm thrilled that Augusta Luise made it through another year. I remember how the poor thing suffered during winter a year ago and her survival looked pretty bleak for a while. You are one of a special few to grow that rose in the US.

I'm sorry and surprised to hear Northland doesn't have EaB this year. It's a rose I honestly forget about because it's not demanding. The only problem it ever gives me is keeping the canes tied back so I can walk past it.

Just yummy, oldrosarian! I can almost smell that sweet fragrance. It reminds me of Charles de Mills without the desire to take over the planet.

It will take over the garden, if your winter isn't very cold. This plant just keeps throwing up long, tall canes until it is a mess of them. I have to prune it back even in the summer.

Mine isn't that ambitious. I've tried to keep it somewhat within the bounds of an obelisk, but it wants out. I plan to set it free after seeing the pics on HMF, but I doubt it will roam very far. I'll give it room, though, just in case. With less restraints on it, it may just take off like gang busters.
