This is the original plan we have purchased to build. We have a large family - 6 people - so ideally would have a large kitchen table (seating at least 8). I like the idea of some type of seating area in that hearth room space too but not sure how it would all be laid out to keep it from being too cluttered. Would appreciate any suggestions! Thank you!

Sorry not quite sure but I assume you mean the family room. You show seating there but my confusion is wht would you put the fireplace where it is it doesnot work at all IMO it need to be either in the sitting area or the eating area but not straddling both. There are a fwe things about this layout that I would not like . The walk from the kitchen to the pantry would be my first no no that small enclosed DR another , a range where proper venting will be a real problem. I would put that FP that is in the FR on the wall to the right where the window is then face the furniture toward the fireplace , I have no idea if you are having a T.V but I sure hopre not above the fireplace in the LR

Interesting plan.

Seems like an extraordinarily wide kitchen. No windows in kitchen. :-(

Two fireplaces/hearths! If you added a covered porch behind the fireplace in the family room (could be accessible via patio doors on each side of the family room), you could have both an interior and outdoor fireplace.

Indoor/outdoor living is great for adding a practical degree of privacy for a large family, especially when the children are teens.

Since you have a formal dining room, if you used part of that wide kitchen space for additional dining space at a bar rather than a casual table in the family room, you could use your entire family room space on both sides of the hearth for seating.

Seems like the steps originating in the foyer are unnecessary. If you created a smaller foyer, you could have a larger formal dining room and/or a larger study -- either of which, if separated from other rooms via French doors, could be a bonus/room to be used as bedrooms when you become empty nesters.

I was referring to the family room as marked on the plan. Sorry for the confusion!

Forget the furniture placement as shown on the plan. How do you want your family to live? Decide if your family will eat in the dining room, at the island or in the hearth room. I opt of making family eat in the dining room. We did a children and we were required to behave. It didn't kill us. If it's very casual dining, you have an island. That would mean that the hearth room would accommodate seating areas. You have a choice of a single sofa with chairs or double sofas facing each other. You may or may not want a game table/project table. Lots of options. Just get rid of the plan that was provided and decorate according to how your family can best use it. I agree that there is no need for a dining table in the family room when there is one in the dining room. You don't need to choose high sheen formal dining furniture, it can be casual enough for everyday family eating.

Can we talk a little bit about the second staircase up from the kitchen?

Lindsey, I'd be inclined to lose the staircase from the foyer and just go with the one to the kitchen, it'd be the most used.

As would I, or turn the one in the foyer to be parallel with the basement stairs (switch back instead of dogleg I guess). If they could get a better kitchen out of removing the back stairs it would be great.
