To update this room while leaving the woodwork (including the furniture) just paint it white and add a lot of bright green vegetation and dark green carpets.
This would give you the uplifting eclectic appearance that would be great with the pool outside.

I think Kelly has picked the perfect colors. Those colors will really brighten up the room. Dark colors make the room look small and it fells like they are caving in on you after a while.

I,agree win the paint colors. Perhaps bamboo furniture with a nice bamboo bar. An indoor out door carpet for sure with colors and designs to liven up the room. Be sure to use outdoor, mildew resistant cushions on the furniture ! A nautical hanging or two would go nicely. Good luck!
