Rug, end tables, a console table behind the sofa, throw pillows, lamps, and art on the walls. I think you could also do with a larger coffee table that will serve both sofas, centered on the FP. Some window treatments would also soften up all the hard edges.

You just moved in...live there for a month or two before making big ($) decisions. One thing you will need to address is the glare on the TV screen. I have windows like yours and that was a huge issue.

Some art with warmer tones and color for the mantel.

Art that's not from the big box stores, a rug 2-4 feet wider than the big sofa, a larger coffee table (centered with the firebox,) something to replace the dated torchiere lamps, a chandelier to replace the ceiling fan, a sofa table behind the loveseat.

The underlying challenge is the furniture and tv are a little oversized for the size of the room...add to that the height of the room is also too tall for the size of the room.....since these are things that cannot change I would choose a cozier warmer color for the walls...something tonal with the couches and floor would take the emphasis off the out of sync elements.....after this you can get a colorful rug with some golden tones ...maybe some black accents to bring the big black tv presence into the mix....

(Black accents in the rug)....this may work with your present art as is if you really like it.....so that the room is a little more eclectic that traditional...lastly it doesn’t seem possible to me to make one coffee table work for both .....couches so I would concentrate on really functional corner tables...keeping the small space in the center open to give a more spacious feel to the tight space.....a couple of smallish ottomans that move around easily would be a big plus in the relaxing use of this room as well

Were you experiencing vertigo when you took the photo? Because I'm experiencing it looking at it. That said, you need portrait-format art over the mantel, big art behind the sofa, and from what I can barely see, a longer media console.

You'll get more help if you give us straight on photos of the room from all four directions.

It's a new home (to you). I would put an overall plan together with a budget because you are going to need new furniture. What you have now (specifically that couch and love seat) are not going to work. So come up with a plan and get someone with design taste to help you BEFORE you spend any money.

Get some real floor lamps and send the torchieres to live with a starving student in the dorm.

I respectfully disagree with cpaul. The furniture may be a tad large, but I see no reason why it won't work. Besides, I like it.

The sofas are just fine...they are my favorite color (caramel) leather and they look really comfy. Keep them! Add the long drapes like celery suggests (believe it or not, you can get them made that long) and a wonderful rug...oriental with brick red as dominant color and a tad of black. Def a round coffee table or ottoman that will serve both sofas...something in wood. Art that you love on the big wall (landscape orientation) and more art (portrait orientation) above mantle. Yum!!

I like furniture color.

Moving the sofa facing the fireplace closer to the other sofa and leaving the walk space in front of the tv might be worthwhile. If you do that ...

... and since a room sized rug wouldn't be needed to "define" your living space ... and since a full sized room rug, such as is suggested by celerygirl , is too large and leaves awkward corners exposed, consider a smaller area rug beneath the coffee table the outer edges of which set under just the front legs of the sofas.

The way the pic is taken makes it less obvious but it appears that the doorway on the left front makes traditional end tables with lamps on both ends of the sofa facing the tv an unworkable idea. Floor lamp(s) or very narrow floor lamp/table combo unit(s) might work.

Put the art over couch. Put round mirror over fp & drapes on lower windows.

Anyone, celerygirl is good and getting better, but I have to call her out for making the art over the sofa too wide and for the art selection in her first rendering which is one of those dreaded canvases cut into three pieces. Don't do that. Just don't.

Agree with groveraxle about not using "one of those dreaded canvases cut into three pieces" -- but then, though it does nothing to brighten the room, I like your original art better than colorful paint randomly splattered on a canvas called art ... though occasionally the patterns of "modern art", if they have some symmetry or elegant form, can be pleasing enough for even me to see them as art -- but then, I'm certainly not an art expert.

I have a very similar living room. It's gone thru changes over the years. Here is where it's at now.

I couldn't afford ceiling to floor curtains so many years ago I made these out of $3.00 bed sheets I got at Walmart. Clipped to rings, they are easy to remove for washing.

What I think you really need for now (for not a lot of money) would be some large pots with plants to bring some organic life into the room.

@Fia, love your $3 curtains, but please lower your art to about 5" over the mantel. It looks like it's trying to fly away.

Haha, thanks groveraxle, but the reason the pic is so high is because the ceiling is soooo high. Lower it just made everything look squished together. If anything, I think I might retire the 2 baby gargoyles. We definitely want to redo the fireplace, but that's a dilemma for another day. :)

@Fia even though your ceilings are high doesn't make it the right spot for your art. You decorate the lower half of the room only.

Hmm. I think you would have to see the whole room. On the opposite wall there are stairs that go up to a high catwalk that leads to the bedrooms on either side of the house. There's a wall up there that you see from down below that has art on it as well. The whole area is very open, airy and light-filled. IDK maybe it's just a SoCal thing. One thing I know for sure: I'm no expert, but I know what I like. Sorry anyone4tea, I certainly didn't mean to hi-jack this thread. =)

I personally love drapes and celerygirl's renderings are great. However, unless you never use the fireplace, I would not hang panels next to it. Major fire hazard.
