I have sown these, along with numerous other SA annuals such as ursinia, arctotis, dimorpotheca, heliophila, felicia and so on. All of these flowers are opportunistic, hanging around until a hint of rain, then bursting into flower. Consequently, they like to be sown in warmth and are extremely fast off the mark - often flowering in as little as 6 weeks after germination (which takes mere days). In my mild Z8 climate, these are my second spring sowing, along with tender veg (beans, curcubits) and annuals such as cleome, tithonia, zinnia...when I sow them directly in drills in the first week of May or thereabouts. They do not like being cold, wet or having any sort of check - best grown later and faster rather than earlier but lacking vigour. Good drainage is also key.
