Mine grew (in winter) in a lightly shaded southern window, not sure if a western window will have enough light. Keep an eye on the leaves. If they're dark green, then it needs more light. In summer I put them on the patio under shade cloth.

When in full bloom though I brought them into the living room to enjoy. We have a huge wall of windows there. Unfortunately those windows face north and while adequate for streps and violets, it isn't enough for most orchids. However, it didn't affect the fragrance.

Usually the fragrance only showed up in the early morning, very rarely in the evening also and it was lovely. Don't recall pepper though-more like a sweetish perfume.

how often do you think I should water it? It is in a small (~3 in.) square plastic pot inside the clay pot and potted in what looks like sphag, but it was dry to the touch two days after I watered it. But I think watering it every three days would be too much.

It depends on the humidity in your home and the moisture holding content of the media. These guys prefer to *not* be dried out. We're very dry here and it seemed like I couldn't water them enough. When they were out in the house, blooming, in the winter (with the heater on) I probably watered them every 3-4 days or so, just letting the water run through. Once a week they were soaked a bit, letting the bark soak up the water. It helped quite a bit, but you've got to be careful that they don't get water logged (which will happen also if they're over-potted). The ones not in bloom were in a mini greenhouse in the upstairs bedroom, and only got watered once a week at most (it stayed very humid in there). In the summer, they were all outside under shade cloth in a semi-shady area, but got watered once a week, and that seems to work.

You'll have to figure out what works for you. If the bark appears dry (check below the top layer), or just barely damp, then they need water. If it's real damp then they don't. Eventually you'll get a rhythm down. General rule of thumb I follow is if in doubt, don't water-but do check the next day!

I purchased a 'P .sogo perfumed bloom", it was checked morning, noon, 2 am etc with a good"nose", but no fragrance. Your bloom is so lovely, no fragrance needed
