living room help

I’m very in love with my living room. It’s large and perfect for my crazy and busy family. Ignore the mess, I snapped quick pictures after I put the girls to bed and hadn’t had a chance to clean. We have a teal and ocean theme going on. We are trying to figure out how to arrange the furniture, plus where to mount the tv. We will be putting up one of those that swivel around so it won’t be too hard to mess with. But I need advice on what to do.

Plus, I think I like how it looks right now. Even with how the curtains look.

I think the cabinet is fine...still thinking it's better between the windows, but I'll let that suggestion go.

You're doing what you can with what you have and that's tons better than getting into debt or racking up cc bills. Don't forget that you can also repurpose all sorts of furnishings from elsewhere in your house. I've seen dressers turned into fabulous media cabinets...night stands as end tables...legs shortened on table to make coffee tables...It just takes some imagination.

I like the plants in the corner...

I agree with pennydesign. Btw, the IKEA ones are a pair of panels.

I found my plain blackout panels (Eclipse signature brand, in Neutral) for my house at Walmart a few years back and ordered some for my living room and master. They look like they cost much more than I paid.

Here are some blackout ones to look at, found on Houzz. I was looking for the best price on neutral.

Gosh it's all coming along so nice! I love how you were able to pull that color from the rug for the vases and pillows and I like the color of the curtains! Bravo on getting so much put together already, looking good!!

Devon, you've come a long way and the room is now cozy and welcoming. I have a couple more tiny suggestions that cost almost nothing. Lower the clock, and group and lower the art over the loveseat as I show below.

When you get around to redoing your curtain rods, raise them and hang your curtains with these:

Clip Rings, Fits Rods 3/4" Diameter, Essential Antique Brass, Set of 12 · More Info
Not only will they make the curtains a bit longer, but they'll hang more nicely, too.

Once the TV is on the new wall ledge, you will have your coffee table back. Walmart sells those rings, too.

What does your family think of the new look?

They love it. It’s more together than it was, cozier even. And surprisingly these curtains block the sun more, but I’m not at all concerned about that. I love that I can pull them back so on nice days I can open the windows and let the fresh air and sunshine in.

That's the word I was going to use - from the beginning of the thread to now your room has become cozier.

    So far....

Girl, don't you ever get tired? Come and do my house... :)

Looks great so far. Trust us on the ring clips (you won't be able to raise the rods, though but that's great as I detest that high drapery rod look, lol!)

Awesome. Just a little bit more tweaking with the wall hangings and it will all look very well put together, those suggested clip rings are a great idea for the curtains, I can't wait to see it, progress is always nice!

If you do add rings with clips to your curtains make sure you get wood to match your drapery rod..metal will not look right:(

do you keep your curtains closed like that all the time?

I would add some blinds instead and have the curtains stationary on each side...shades at the local hardware store are very inexpensive...

sorry about the drapes at $39 but thought 2 panels for that price are really good....

Not sure on the size of your windows so just guessed...$7.99 per window

40”x64” have any size you need.

I'm so impressed with all you've done in such a short time and, yes, you are a super star!!!! You must feel so good when you walk in the room now. The rug looks fine now.

Curious why you didn’t use the media cabinet you already have with the plants on it?

How about if you use your Ikea Lack tables as a coffee table? I think the fit will be better for your space.

And, for fun, Google images "Lack table hack" to see the amazing things that people have done to customize them!

pennydesign The TV was on the Lack coffee table. (See it to the left of the last picture.) The new media wall shelf frees that up to be used.

And do you sew? Or does mom? I suggest you take your old drapes (unless they're being used elsewhere) and make some fun floor pillows for the kids....you can make them to fit perfectly under any table for storage.

    I'm all about re-purposing...

groveraxle Could you arrange the TV wall art, maybe adding the white boxes, letter, piece from over the door from the walls near the dining room?

    last modified: 7 years ago

    Thanks, t I didn't see that..

Then absolutely let's get these babies customized!!

Agree that grouping the art will have more impact...What else do you have around the house Devon? Do you want to gather it all in one place and let us take a peek?

The coffee table and three end tables I have are cheap Walmart ones. I think we’ve maxed our budget on home items for right now, especially because we are also fixing up the laundry room. Thank you all. You have been a great help, I don’t know if I have said that yet. Also, the rings for the drapes will have to wait but I might do that too. My whole family loves what we have done.
I will post a picture soon of the room clean. Haven’t had a chance to vacuum and sweep yet.

You are doing fantastic! Amazing considering you weren't even feeling well when you got started. Don't buy anything else. Shop your house for more ocean related art, etc that can be added to that big wall. Take a photo straight on and I'm sure groveraxel will come soon to play. (So much easier than making a bunch of holes.)

Well that media cabinet looks wonderful! Are you still going to use the floating one? I would save the money and send it back.

one suggestion...I would gather all your wall art and do a collage and only do uneven numbers of art in one spot...so I would move your this is the life sign to over the two art pieces to the right of TV and move the two closer together should be more than 3” apart.

this room is so nice I would just remove that anchor...it just is not pretty enough for this room:)) no need for it

your clock need to be moved down middle should be at 62” from floor:)

    the room looks so nice!

The other 2 plants in the bluish pots (not the big green plant) put them on the table under the tv. You already have the pillows on that side of the room and they are such a pretty colour they would look great on that wall as well. I would like to look at that colour all the time.

Do you have any other rooms we can play with? Devon, you have been so gracious and so much fun, thank-you.

This Houzz community is truly wonderful. Such generous and enthusiastic souls. Happy to be a part of it!

I have plenty of rooms! Lol. I’m ready to post about my laundry room lol. But I don’t have a current picture. Thank you!

I'm sorry. The TV is too high, whichever console you use. I had to guess at the length of the new one, but I might do something like this:

So is there nothing I could or should do with the space above? It’s driving me crazy
  • 7 years ago

Yes...switch it to the window side :)

Alternatively, you could do something like this behind the tv. Google "tv accent wall"

Remember these? :-) You need the floating shelves to fill some of the space if you stay on that wall.

More shelves just needs more stuff...this room needs less small stuff and some nice large wall art..I would rather see empty walls rather than a bunch of small items...something to think about.

  • PRO

After looking at the room closely...I would suggest flipping the room like this..and yes you would need the cable company to come out and add cable on other side between the windows...hang your big wall clock above the sofa with all your other art into a big wall art collage....

    last modified: 7 years ago

I may have suggested that three or four times, hiwe....I would say it's a no-go... :)

    last modified: 7 years ago

You've made a lot of nice changes. I agree more shelves need more things so I would probably stay away from that and head toward the direction of large art.

I do think the room would look even nicer flipped as shown in the floor plan.

Sorry tried skimming over suggestions...just kept looking at the room And that wall is so big it needs large furniture in front of it to break it up and that way all the art and wall clock will fill the wall over the sofa...just makes more since...costs nothing and I think will be much better layout...and you want cozy this will do it!

DEVON please consider this new layout...I know it is hard moving things around but this is the winner! Your tv cabinet will be perfect size between the side windows...

As much as I want to, I can’t. My husband mounted the tv on the wall and says he’s not moving it for at least a year. He’s planning on buying a new tv soon, but that’s the only change he says he will make.

:-) The family sounds like they have been very patient with the changes.

    last modified: 7 years ago

    Maybe, patient...maybe not :(

I'm so sorry that you need to ask, Devon. And I'm sorry that the answer is a firm "no".

Enjoy your new space, though! Relax for a bit!

I don’t have to ask. I just like to. My husband works 12 hour shifts 7 days a week. He’s a supervisor for overnight shifts, 4 pm to 4 am. He’s never home, and when he is, I don’t like to give him extra work. I would rather he spend time with our children while he can.

Plus I really like the set up I have now.

I like the setup recommendations but I think I would prefer it this way too because based on the entry spot I feel like you can enter the room and see the full setup instead of the TV becoming a focal point.

The room looks good now and is more functional than it was before. The only problem with the TV wall is that it's a little empty. But I'm guessing if you're looking at getting a new TV in a year, you'll be getting a larger one which will help to fill the wall. (Another reason for keep it on the current wall: a larger TV probably won't fit between the windows.) For now, I'd look at arranging all your art and maybe even your clock on the TV wall. The other walls behind the sofas can get away with being bare.

When it's time to replace the TV, come back here and ask for help BEFORE you hang it. Design the whole wall at once so everything looks intentional.

Yes the room has transformed for sure..well at least you have another option if you ever want to change it up! Looks great...enjoy:)
