The lighting in my kitchen and adjoining family room in my townhome is bad. I'm getting ready to add some recessed lights. The current plan is to add about 5 led recessed lights in the kitchen, 4 in the family room and one in front of the french doors. The nasty light fixture near the cooktop will be gone competely. And I'm thinking about adding 2 small pendent lights above the island. The kitchen currently has under counter floursescent lights, which I hate. They will be gone. I may or may not eventually add updated lighting under the counter. I'm going to wait and see if it's really needed once I add the recessed. All recessed lights will have dimmer switches as I know the led lights can be quite bright.

There's a fan with light in the family room currently. I don't know if I will need that light since I'm doing recessed in the area, so am thinking about replacing that fixture. My thoughts were just a cool modern fan, no light. I'm afraid if I do the pendent and keep the fan/light fixture that's there now, it will look too cluttered. But I do like having a fan in this space. I'm looking for input on how many recessed you'd do and if pendent lights above the island seem to be a good choice?

PS I will be adding artwork, new coffee table, etc to this space once I find something I love. Also the kitchen cabinets will be redone (likely painted) in a white/offwhite color and will be adding granite and a backsplash. Kitchen will be done next year, per my budget.
