Philly things to do

I’m going to be in Philly in 2 weeks with my 17 yo DD. Just the two of us. We were there a few years ago and saw the highlights — the historic stuff, the liberty bell, the jail, you know, the educational stuff. Any “hidden gems” to recommend? We are staying in Rittenhouse Square. Touring a couple colleges so we don’t have tons of free time (we’ll be there 3 nights) but would like to see a couple things or at least some good shopping and eating?

    The Barnes Collection.

Yes, Barnes. How about the Reading Terminal Market and the Italian Market?

    Any Garces restaurant.

    Longwood Gardens.

Many many many great places along East Passyunk Ave. Check Yelp, and the choices are amazing.

I am also a fan of Garces restaurants-- Amada is a favorite. In fact, I was going to stop there tomorrow night until I read the forecast. I also like Pizzeria Stella .. but there are so many places to get wood fired pizza!

Spruce St Harbor is fun but I don't think it will be open in 2 weeks.

You probably won't have time to do both this visit so I'd pick the Reading Terminal - it's fun to jostle along with the crowd and there are a lot of interesting little shops and food places and it's all in one building in Center City and not far from where you're staying. The Italian Market is in S. Philly and the shops are spread out along many blocks.

Since you'll be in Rittenhouse you can pop into Parc Brasserie on the square. It's one of Stephen Starr's restaurants with tasty French baked goods too. The kids took me there for brunch on my birthday and everyone enjoyed their meals.

Stop into the lobby of the Comcast Tower at 17th and JFK Boulevard to see the show on the enormous tv screen in the lobby, along with some whimsical public art (look up). There are some shops downstairs, mostly food.

Also, if you near 6th and Market, go into the Curtis Building to see the fabulous Tiffany glass mural, The Dream Garden. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/tiffany-glass-mural-the-dream-garden

And of course The Magic Gardens at 10th and South.https://www.phillymagicgardens.org/

if you going to Penn, have a look inside of The Fisher Fine Arts Library right on the main quad.

The place I want to go to next time I am in Philly is the Victor Cafe with its opera singing waiters. I have never been, so I can't vouch for it.
    Victor Cafe

We had dinner at the Victor a couple of years ago, when we were visiting before starting our move. It's like the old Tosca in San Francisco, also one of my favorites. We loved the Victor, food is good, the waiters were wonderful.

walking long the river and boathouse row if the weather is nice

    philadelphia zoo

The Magic Gardens. The Morris Arboretum (smaller and more manageable than Longwood Gardens). We love both the Reading Market and the Italian Market. The Franklin Fountain (classic ice cream parlor).

Oh, thanks, these are great suggestions. Definitely going to check out Reading Terminal Market (went there last time too), East Passyunk Ave., Magic Gardens, amd the Italian market. DD likes to eat and shop! Less interested in art or zoos (which my sons would enjoy more, but they're not coming).

Oh I'll second the Mütter Museum and it's within walking distance of Rittenhouse.

Lots of great restaurant on East Passyunk, many with BYOB. Will, Noord, Laurel.

Laurel is expensive. We took my son there for his 50th b'day last year, with his wife. The 4 of us. $900 later, we had gelato at the place next door. Passyunk is (and should be) young and fun, Try a warm evening, and look for the cheap places. It should appeal to your daughter a lot. Forgo the expensive places for things a teenager will like. It's all about seeing and being seen at that age, not 'fine dining'.

(Side note: a year ago, first week in Aprl, was warm and lovely and worth a walk down the sidewalk after dinner. This year, it's cold and wet. Save Passyunk for a warm evening.)

We were in Philly last summer not to far from Rittenhouse Square. We had dinner at Dandelion Pub, just a couple of blocks from our hotel. Our whole group loved the restaurant and we plan to visit again next trip to Philly.

Pumpkin is a nice small restaurant on South St between 17th and 18th.

Take a tour of City Hall, and a ride to the top of the tower, close to William (Billy; it's like he's one of the "family") Penn. Or, ride to the top of One Liberty Place. There are still a few interesting parts of the old John Wanamaker (now Macy's) store at 13th and Market Streets.

Thanks again, everyone. As it turns out, between tours and coach meetings and seeing a friend, we will now have hardly any time to explore much! But I have my list...and will fit in as much as I can.

Just to follow up, we ate at both Parc and Dandelion Pub and enjoyed our meals at both! As anyone in the area knows, the weather Sun-Tues this week was not very springlike. Ugh. We went for a cold walk on Sun. afternoon when we arrived, just random wandering until we had stretched our legs enough after our 6 hour drive. Our tour of Temple was cold and windy on Mon. After that we ate at Dandelion and were back in our cozy hotel room by 7 or so. On Tues., we relocated to West Chester and by late afternoon, there were snow flurries! Anyway, we really didn’t end up with much free time after our school tours.

At least we had decent weather for our drive home! Thanks for all the ideas, though.

I'm glad you enjoyed your meals. You'll just have to come back when Philly is having a beautiful spring day. Urban campuses can appear so cold and forlorn on a blustery day. I wasn't far from you on Monday - I went into the city to visit DD and have lunch - she owns a home just off Temple's campus.

Temple alum here. They have made so many upgrades to the campus. I hope that you liked the tour. #TempleMade

So glad that you enjoyed the Dandelion Pub. We plan to eat there again next trip to Philly.

If your daughter or you are interested in cars, check out Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum. It is near the airport -so definitely not walking distance from Rittenhouse square. But worth a visit for car buffs.

I went to Temple! I returned to school as an adult and Temple was just right for me. I haven't been back on campus in years, but understand there have been great changes. I am guessing you also toured West Chester U. Big difference between an inner city campus and one out in the far burbs. West Chester is such a cute town. Hope your daughter picks a Philly area school and we can arrange a get-together.

Yes, the weather has been awful. My friend calls it "Sprinter".

Hm, sorry, DD wasn’t too excited about Temple. Actually, she liked it more than I thought she would (after seeing GW she said she didn’t want a city school). She just really seems to prefer the suburban campuses. She liked WCU a lot. She is chasing a spot on a gymnastics team, so that is a huge factor in the schools we’re visiting. She happened to have coach meetings at those two schools, which is why we went. It was much easier when I was touring schools with my older, non-athlete kids!

If she gets invited back for an “official visit” in the fall, we can try to arrange a GW meeting!

I'm not so sure I would have wanted to go to Temple as an 18 year old. The surrounding neighborhood is pretty bad, although you have quick access to center city. The kids who go to West Chester like it a lot. Hope a fall get-together is possible!
