What area of zone 8? TX will need different plants from WA or SC.

wow thanks for the detailed response. It gets the sun in the morning from 9am to 1pm. It faces south.

Morning sun means that there will be shade during the hottest part of the day. I wouldn't plant real shade lovers, but any ground cover that likes sun or part shade should do fine there since the shade for most of the day will be fairly bright (no overhanging trees or very close buildings).

Junipers would want more sun than you have also.

A shorter groundcover that might work is Ajuga, which might need you to remove plants spreading from the edges every year or so, either with pulling or a short-lived herbicide. The spreading type of Liriope might work here. There are several kinds of spreading low-growing Oenothera ( macrocarpa and speciosa are two) which you can check out to see how they behave in your area.

Using a combination of plants in randomly scattered clumps will give you some variety for a while as they duke it out, and the strongest may eventually take over, though you may find different plants like different conditions along the slope better and will site themselves in the long run. You can most likely plant some other spreading perennials in the bottom couple of feet where the soil won't be as dry and the sun won't hit as long. Regardless, don't plant more than 4 or so kinds of groundcovers In larger clumps a few feet across so it looks cohesive and you can readily ID what is there and remove weeds.
