Use reactive stains by Ciranova.

These reactive stains look like they would really work but I cannot find many pictures, etc with people using them. What is your experience? Have you seen the anthracite grey?

I haven't used the anthracite gray, yet. But, I have applied, burnt oak, old oak, stripped oak, old gray, weathered gray and castle oak, along with smoke and fume. The colors shown is with 1-1 neutral/white oil on top. The product is easy to apply, it covers like aniline dye, but cleans up easier. Which means you can blend different species with a single color. It needs to be applied perfectly the first time around. It is a reactive stain, it can be unpredictable, which is why spot fixing can be tricky. Anyone who has experience fuming and smoking can easily apply this.

Water will reactivate the stain and move it around. You can apply solvent base finishes over it. Water solubles will need to get sprayed for the first coat or use a de-waxed shellac for universal binder or sealer before applying a water base finish over it.

We tried and tried with the builder and their sub-contractors but could not achieve the gray effect. We settled on a blend of 75% pickled oak and 25% classic gray, which looked good pre-poly and turned slightly oaky brown after the Bona HD water-based poly (2 coats). We're still happy with the floor color but are bummed we couldn't get a gray.

Sorry I didn't see this until a late commenter gave it a bump. I would have recommended you try bleaching the wood before staining. Bleaching reduces the brown and raises the grain like water popping resulting in a more uniform result.

Would love to see a photo. We are staining next week and looking to do that as well on white oak.

It came out great. I’m trying to get a darker coastal gray, but thinking it’s too hard with using Minwax

I'm a big fan of the Nordicseal product. It always looks good over White Oak. 2-3 coats will usually do it. www.oakandbroad.com

Have you used Minwax? That’s the stain our floor contractors use.
