Hostas split so easily. I would make three out of those!

You will know when you slide it out of the pot, if you have 3 separate divisions, or one nice crown with 3 eyes (shoots). Either way you can make 3 separate plants out of it, if you wish, with a knife, but wouldn't you rather have a nice multi-eyed clump of Francee, rather than than 3 singles that will take longer to form a nice looking clumps. It takes a few years to get nice multi eyed plants if you start with only one division (piece of crown with an eye (shoot) and roots.

That’s good to know I can. I didn’t realize it would take so long to get back to that size though, I may just plant it whole but then again it may be fun to try splitting one. Will I have to take away all the dirt before finding out whether it has three crowns or just one ?

Slide it out and gently massage the root mass and the potting soil (media) will fall away. Most hostas take 3-5 years to get their mature characteristics, leaf shape and size.

i swear you brought up this topic a few weeks or month ago ..

what i said then .. maybe you remember.. lol ...

the crowns were divided last fall.. and held in cold storage ... potted mid winter.. and forced early for sale now ...

odds are extremely high ... that there is nothing to divide right now ... but there is a chance .. somehow.. you have two crowns in the pot ...

i would NOT divide it right now ... but i would look and see if there are two ..

besides.. you should get rid of the potting media ... when you plant it in native soil anyway .... so look then ...

Yea I thought I did too.. I hate using the app for Houzz, i can’t figure out how to search. That post was a different hosta though. I didn’t know if there was a way to tell based on the size of the pant or if I had to actually remove the dirt to look at the crown.

It looked like two to me. I took the advice of some and planted it all and did not try to split it.. I just bought more to fill in the other areas ;) haha
