If money allows, new cabinets would be great but if not consider other options to give it a boost. Omit the granite splash and do full height tile backsplash - up and over the window and behind the hood. It looks like the island could be larger. Add cabinets to the back side, put the microwave in one of them, new top - solid color to blend with the existing tops. Maybe new cabinet color on island only. It may need to be moved for balance within the space. Its hard to tell from the pictures. Larger shades on the pendant lights.

I would not touch those cabinets.

Remove the 4" backsplash and replace with different backsplash.

Replace the pendants.

Change the window treatment.

Leave the cabinets alone. The floors look like laminate . Replace them and the short backsplash. I would replace the pendants and paint. Those cabinets look like they are good quality and the layout works.

It is hard to tell from the pictures, but could you get rid of the eat-in table and the island and replace both with a much larger island with seating space along the backside? Microwave drawer in island to get it off the counter space.

I agree with others on the replacement of pendants and a new nice roman shade for the window.

There is a lot of wood there. I wonder if you could get some of the doors made into glass fronts to break up the solid wall of wood.

Your current granite doesn't look too bad. But if you are replacing the island you're going to need something coordinating. Maybe have a look at soapstone for the island. There are variations from dark grey, black and some have a lot of veining, some less or almost none. It is a neutral choice and goes with many other granites and kitchen colours very well.

I also think the wall colour in the kitchen needs changing. I don't feel like it goes overly well with the colours in that room otherwise.

Good luck with the purchase - if the choice is dependent on this kitchen, I'd go for it. You could do far, far worse than this for sure.

Leave cabinets but pivot and replace the island with a wider one so the bar stools face the stove with backs to dining area. you’d then get 3 working areas vs the current 2. Backs curently facing the fridge is odd.

Gray painted cabinets are over; I am surprised this forum still sees inquiries about them here and there. Setting aside whether gray is "so 2016" (trying to make a joke here!), a gray island would not go with the rest of your kitchen.

Why mess with seemingly nice cabinets? Extend backsplash, go with a bigger island and get the microwave off the counter.

Your new kitchen looks very nice. I would definitely get new pendants and some pretty runners for the floor.

The four inch backsplash is a dated look but not terrible. If you like the counter and it was installed correctly, you might be able to pop it off the backsplash and replace it with a more modern full backsplash.

If you don't care for the granite, make new counters and a backsplash part of your update budget. Something cleaner and less busy that relates better to the wood tones of the cabinets. For a backsplash, look at fireclay and crackle subways which are a bit more interesting than plain subways but don't have busy patterns.

If you'd like to paint the island and have a good accent color in mind that works with your space and furniture, that would be an easy update.

Leave cabinets. Maybe change out the granite to something more current like quartz. Add backsplash. New lighting and your good to go.

I would not paint the island. I am not sure what look you are going for, but painting the island will probably not achieve that.

I would live in the house for a year to see what does and does not work before you start painting cabinets (very, very expensive), moving islands, etc.

I think the island the way it is enables those at the island to see the TV instead of having their back to the family room/eating area.

Definitely leave the cabinets! Not sure about painting the island. I've seen a lot of two tone kitchens with painted cabinets, but your cabinets are beautiful! I agree with everyone else. Extend the backsplash, new pendant lighting, and new flooring! Excited to see your updated kitchen!

Have the cabinets painted professionally then proceed new counters and back splash and take the back splash all the way up the wall.

Your cabinets are so beautiful. I love the look of soapstone on brown toned cabinets. That could look nice on your counters. Add a nice backsplash and new lights and you’re done.

I would wait and see if you like the layout before doing anything. You don’t want to spend money on cosmetics and then realize you hate having to walk around the island everyday to get from sink to fridge. You should see what works and what doesn’t, save your $$ and then do a cosmetic and functional change at the same time.

I love your kitchen as is. I agree that living in the space for a while is a good way to find out what needs to be changed...whether you suddenly HATE the countertops after living with them or whether the island needs to be changed for better work flow. If I were to change something right off, I think I would go with different flooring as the flooring and cabinet colors don't really compliment each other. If the appliances are in good working order, I'd leave them as is. They look pretty in the room. I think the main problem with the pics is that it's an empty kitchen. Once you get a window treatment, change out lights, add some personalization, it'll be a completely different kitchen. I LOVE your cabinets and wouldn't change them at all...I personally don't like granite countertops, so they would GO first if I had a budget that allowed for change just for the sake of change! Have you made an offer on the house? It would be fun to see how it looks after your updates, so send pics!

Adding a prep sink to a larger island would be a great addition to your kitchen, however, without knowing the room's dimensions, it's hard to know how large an island you can fit or whether it can be turned 90 degrees. I don't trust what I see in the photos; the fridge is definitely distorted from its actual size, as is the sink cabinet, so I think the photos were shot with a wide lens. The aisles may not be as generous as they appear to be.

I agree with what several people suggested above: remove the 4" backsplash and tile the walls and replace the white outlet in the island with one that blends with the cabinet stain. I chose Lutron Sienna for the light switches in the side of one of my cabinets. However, I'd live in the home for some time before changing the backsplash in case you decide that you also want to change the counters.

Lutron colors and Leviton colors.

I'd spend some of your budget on improving function, including adding ROTs (roll out trays) to the base cabinets and a trash pull-out under the sink or in a nearby base cabinet.
