hmm, well I will differ with the low maintenance in part; I see one of those cargobox pools laying parallel with your house thats bisected with the sidewalk to the door. that should use up the area nicely; goldfish and lilys, but ahead of that (near the bottom of the pic), a nice shade tree with alot of span to give the fish some shade and a nice sitting area. Low maintenance seems good unless moderate maintenance gives you something worth being proud about.

I will field it from your request: How about a fake saguaro cactus made of plaster or concrete? or acrylic? The classic desert tall barrel thing: I checked on that cactus and apparently they won't easily grow in florida, but a fake one with a nice green tone to it.. maybe a sombrero on the tallest 'branch' could be a fun yard decoration.

I would go to a Botanical Garden and take pictures of the plants you really like. Then research those plants for general care, bloom time, etc. A water feature would look good there too. But your choices depend on how much maintenance you’re wanting to put into it.

Your current walkway is rather narrow, especially with the plants spilling onto it from the other side. If there is money, I might add a course of contrasting color brick or pavers to each side of the walkway to make it feel more generous before doing any planting.

I would most likely expand the bed to include the tree so that you don't have that funky little peninsula of grass to have to mow. It will also keep the weed whacker from damaging the tree bark if there isn't grass around the tree.

Low maintenance means you want an edging to keep the grass out if there isn't one there. It can be a deep narrow V cut into the soil that is renewed several times a year or it could be a buried edging with a mowing strip set at ground level, such as a course of bricks to allow the mower wheels to run on it to save having to do additional trimming.

I don't know plants for your area, but I would put a small shrub about where your pot is, and if there is space (I can't see how large it is front to back from this angle) I would put a second shrub behind it and then fill in with a lower groundcover. You don't want plants, especially taller ones crowding the walkway or blocking clear sight lines to the front door.

If you add photos showing a larger area of the front of the house, you may get more/better suggestions since no bed is seen in isolation; it is part of the surroundings, and finding plants that complement your current plantings would be a goal.

Per the recommendation of a couple of people, here are some additional photos of the area and the surrounding area. Thank you for the great responses. I think I'll pass on the large concrete cactus though!

You've got enough going on that it might be worthwhile to have a consultant or designer visit the site in person, make suggestions.

Add a blue pot fountain near the walkway, with black river pebbles beneath. Add yellow or fuschia multicolored lantana, blue daze, and foxtail ferns.

Evolvulus is a lovely plant. I grow it in a pot and overwinter it in the house.

A white pergola to provide some shade and a sitting area would be nice.

You might consider a yucca plant in lieu of the more expensive cacti.
