Range decisions!

Who knew, I would spend so many hours researching to pick a 48" cooking range on a tight budget. I started at used high end (Viking, Wolf) and then moved away, as the used one's might be a gamble and 4-5K is a big number to risk.

Then I found THOR - HRD4803U48 dual fuel which fits the bill. Just before settling on that, I stumbled on a open box item - American Range Pro Series Gas ARROB648GD for $400 lesser annnnd I am back to the deciding game...lol

What would you experienced folks vote for?

Thor is a new set of products by Chinese manufacturer Haier. I haven't seen reviews yet. Viking isn't considered a high end product by Yale Appliance. Too many problems.

I looked at American Range at the restaurant store near my house but I haven’t bought anything yet. The Manager said they have a good warranty and customer service. We are just starting a build so it will be a while till we purchase. I am looking forward to finding out what you choose and how you like it. Good luck

I have an American Range. It's okay but the customer/warranty service is very poor. I suggest spending more. Or less. Just spend elsewhere. :)

Any recommendations on the BlueStar ryburns26?

The BlueStar is loved by many posters here but while there are several models in the smaller sizes, only the RNB and Platinum come in the 48".

What is your plan for ventilation and make up air that you will need for these types of ranges?

Both BS models have high BTUs and have an open burner tray so are a little different to clean.

This shows how they are cleaned.

Not saying you don't need 48" but why do you want it? Adding in the necessary ventilation increases the cost quite a bit especially if you have to have make up air.

BlueStar does make this for Big Chill and it is similar to The BS Culinary range with a sealed burner tray and ring capped burners.

    I. do not think they are sold locally but that may have changed. That would be something to look into.

Most people here are recommending BS's star shaped burner. If you look back on previous posts there is a lot written on them. The big differences are

-uncapped so the flame goes straight up instead of flared like you get with a capped burner on high heat, I use big pans so a ring burner works for me.

-star shaped so disperses heat over the bottom of the pan as long as the pan is sized to the burner. This is an advantage for cast iron, steel and some stainless pans that don't conduct heat all that well.

The BS RNB and Platinum both have higher BTU burners. I am not a fan of the platinum because of the configuration of the oven.

I built my kitchen around the 60” platinum. I’m in love with it. Super awesome open burners and the oven bakes like a champ.

What struck me was the comments about being on a tight budget and $4-5k being a big number. Yes, that is to most people, but have you budgeted for the hood for this 48” range? Echoing what Wekick said about ventilation. You will need a hood that is 48-54” wide and 1000 cfms or more. That size may mean you have to change your exhaust duct to a larger one. And that size hood usually means the requirement to add a make-up air system (“MUA”), as you don’t want all those cfms pulling carbon monoxide back into the house. That size hood plus MUA, we’re talking $4k and likely more. Tell us what you have for an exhaust hood now.

wekick and friedajune excellent points! We decided on a 1500 cfm 48" hood ducted to outside of the home, single level ranch. Never knew about the MUA, the one we got is a internal blower. Now, I am wondering how to go about the external blower...phew!

Gorgeous setup ryburns26! We have two cooks at home and wanted 48" from a long time and the cabinets are already ordered and being built. So, no going back there...lol. We use primarily cast iron, All clad, Silga and restaurant quality cooking pans.

4-5K is the stove only budget.

Based on the great discussion points and adhering to budget, I will research more on Big Chill and other options, for now I am leaning towards the THOR as the duel fuel will keep me happy on both cooktop and oven front. American range customer service and gas oven feature is making me move away from it.

Would appreciate more references like Big Chill.
