Gas stove grates too high?

Hi,

We recently moved into our new home and have a stainless steel gas cook top. Grates on the cooktop are extremely high. (Something similar - Gas cooktop)

Now my cast iron pan which is already so heavy, takes forever to heat up and even after it is on high for so long, doesn't heat up as it should.

Can we buy separate grates which are not that high? or any workaround?

Thanks

How high are the grates in relation to your burners? Heat rises, and as long as you flames are under the pan and not shooting out around it, should be heating you pan just fine unless you’re talking a distance of 4” or higher. If you remove the grate and hold the pan over it but closer to the burner, does it heat up faster?

Did you try a different burner? Most newer cooktops have different size jets and can vary the heat output.

Last but not least, what color are your flames? Blue or orange/yellow? Is the cooktop heating properly or burners adjusted properly for the gas?

I am having the same problem with a brand new kitchen aid my wife loves it but I think the grates are ridiculous. So I've been researching and not having much luck on the web. I'm thing about grinding down the grate legs.

Everyone owns the latest gadget phone, but no one posts pictures. Pictures are required. No one should even be allowed to post a dilemma without an image attached.

I understand live_wire_oak, so here are some pictures

That appears to be a standard closed burner. It requires more distance from the surface for proper air flow than do closed burner ranges. The grates are positioned correctly.

Bosch got it wrong on those grates. It's the same standard burner style as my old Jenn-Air and the new GE profile I just purchased. The grates are closer to the burner and the flame actual reaches the grate. I would suggest to anyone looking and enjoy cooking with gas…take a tape measure.

I moved in a house that grate is about the 1.5 inches, it took forever to cook my food. looking for solution for a closer grate.

Mark, I feel your pain and our only solution was to return the Bosch. We asked if they made lower grates and they did not. We looked into buying custom made grates but couldn't find anyone that made them. This is a real issue manufacturers need to take note of and correct. I went to model homes to test different ranges and the GE range worked well also Ferguson had a test kitchen for a couple of high end brands. Best of Luck!

When I took chemistry classes and we used bunson burners, they told us to keep the test tube right at the tip of the flame and that was the hottest part. Well I have a GE gas range with cast iron grates that place the tip of the flame too far away from the bottom of the pan. It looks like the most I could grind or cut from the bottom of the grate is about 3/8 of an inch. Not sure if it's worth the effort.

If your pot sits too close to the flame...like when the flame licks the bottom of the pot, more CO is produced and fuel is wasted because at the tip of the flame there is still fuel to be consumed.
The manufacturer knows best, leave the grates alone.

Same here. Can't get water to boil!! My pots slide around. And my arms are weak. Hate
