Blending Wood Colors

Should all wood colors match? We have a great room/kitchen combo and want to add a built-in Entertainment Center on large opposite facing wall. Transitional style. Does it have to match kitchen cabinet color (cream) or could we use a light wood such as teak?

If the style is cohesive I do not think the wood has to match. But good if the colors are also complimentary - both 'warm' or 'cool' as well. Actually variety makes the home look friendlier and less planned out. Sounds like the kitchen is painted, so a natural finish would work for me. How about a photo?
