ID Malene Birger

You might know Malene Birger for her work in the fashion industry: the
Scandinavian designer founded her first brand DAY Birger et Mikkelsen in
1997, her second brand By Malene Birger was launched in 2003. Now she
has founded BIRGER1962,
a creative studio devoted to design, interior and art. The studio
offers a variety of opportunities: a complete concept and universe;
individual commissions; design projects in co-operation with other
creative companies; or simply a creative touch for those who wish to
bring Malene’s personal interior style and designs to their space. A
style expressed in her eclectic approach to interior and decoration, her
strong influence from the Arabian and African cultures, and her love
for original 70’s design furniture, timeless products and arty objects.
Malene’s art and artworks are often strongly presented in her interior
projects and some pieces are available through on her website Birger1962. Her London home, which is featured here, is a good example of her eclectic style.

I liked the first and third pictures, but the second looked like a muddled mess, and there is no concession to the often bleak London weather with the absence of warm tones, reds, yellows, greens, and no drapes on the windows. She seems to lean more toward the modern/ethnic vibe, but I've seen beautiful eclectic rooms with many warm colors, and they look more inviting to me. To each his own though.

Great example of white on white tones for walls and trim. A good choice if you love so many different shades of wood like I do.

It's "ho-hum" to me, but I really dislike the portrait in the upper right of the third picture. I also do not think it is arranged well to show off what pieces are there - it looks a bit cramped to me - I think some of the pieces need more space in order to be appreciated.

I don't dislike it - I just pretty neutral about it. It does not move or impress me.

I like it because it uses repetitive shapes. This is something most don't see but it's what pulls a room together, imo.

Too monochromatic for my taste and I detest crystal chandeliers in rooms other than a dining room, and then only if the house comes with hot-and-cold-running-maids to keep those crystals glistening.

Someone been playing with photoshop? The lamps in the first pic have some sort of "cap" on them that is not there in the second photo. And the blue whatever it is in the second pic seems about to topple over. The blanket draped over the couch arm is different too.

I want to like it. But I just can't. I think maybe because there's too much stuff, and that's not something I often say lol.

The room as it appears in the first picture I like best, though I don't like the lamps.

William McLure has a similar aesthetic, including the art, but I find his more appealing. Maybe because it's broken up with other styles and not so unrelievedly boho/"global".

Chandelier and fabrics are the best part, to me. Love the windows; but it's architecture more than decor. Love the colors, quite a lot. Dislike the lamps and these side tables..why to flank them around the settee, who's going to sit there now, surrounded by these huge lamps. Like the sideboard..

I think: it's a bit too uptight, the room. For its vibe. It doesn't want to be, but it is. I can decipher it, so to say. But I like spaces that can not be deciphered. I don't know whether it makes sense..

I'd love to visit and move through the room,sit in different spots and take it all in...in part and in whole. Strikes me that this is not a space designed for a static Instagram moment or for conventional ideas of 'order' and I appreciate that.
