Do you know the difference between pruning and...

shaping? Well, pruning is like making tall tree's small, shaping is also pruning but more precise. If you know what your tree should look like when it is of final size.

I have notice that most tree's bought from nurseries are all tall/lanky. (cheaper to ship). If i bought a 3 foot tall tree, i cut it in halve, about 18" tall. The tree will grow faster to make up, pick the new shoots you like to keep and you be surprise with what your tree look like in no time. From the other part do some grafting and make more tree,s.

Case in point, bought a persimmon tree that i like and now i have more than a dozen of them, not only that i have exchange cutting from that tree and trade a lot of stuff for my citrus collection, all done.
