Hungarian Oak pruning question

I recently bought a hungarian oak (quercus frainetto) sprout and it has this small "twig" in the middle of it. My question is should I cut this off or just leave it be?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the bad pic quality.

That looks like the old top, dead one year ago. That's why you have two tops now, both side branches are trying to be the new top. You can cut the old, dead top off if you want, or it will fall off by it self eventually.

Looks like a seed raised plant, "Hungarian oak" seedlings I have seen here have always been Quercus cerris - or looked the part. The only true Hungarian oaks I've seen were grafted clones.

the general rule ... is that if its dead ..... its removed ... but i would probably cut it as far back as i could... without wounding the other parts .. and if i had to leave a half inch or so.. so what ...

personally.. i think the bigger question ... is if you remove one of the larger parts ... and splint this thing up a bit ....

even if you dont straighten it 100% ... in 30 or 50 years ... you'll never knew you did it .. lol ... thats tree time ...

but then ... its just one thing after another... lol ... you dont have a lots of leaves right now.. and its a recent transplant... so i dont know if i would remove half of the canopy .. but you still might splint it ... hmmm ...

and the final issue ... that doesnt look like tree media ... especially for oak.. which prefer a sip of water.. and then near drying before another sip ...do not keep it WET ....

btw.. since its a new transplant.. i would not have it in full sun for at least a month.. bright shade ...

btw.. where are you ... if you are going to hang around.. add your location on your member's page.. so it shows up next to your name ...

    good luck

I'd like to thank you guys for the useful information.

    to ken_adrian:

So I did cut it off as far back as I could, but I'm kinda hesitating about removing half of the canopy. I know there's not much to risk as this is a very young plant so it have all the time in the world to recover but still...

The soil is actually a mixture of white & black peat (75% - 25%); ph 5,5-6,5. I guess it's for vegetable seeds and alikes but I didn't have a clue that it's not suitable for an oak tree, haha. I live in Hungary - funnily enough - and as far as I know the "hungarian" oak is rare to find in this country despite it supposed to be a native tree. (I had to order this one from Italy btw).
