Venting 2 bathroom fans

Just moved into our house and the inspector told us our 2 bathroom fan exhaust pipes are sitting on our soffit and should be vented through the roof. Roof is brand new and we live in Wisconsin where there's often snow/ice sitting on the roof...really don't want to put any holes in it for those reasons. Both fans are under 10' from the gable end of our house and probably 5' from each other in the attic. Is there any problem with venting them through that gable side of the house and can we connect their lines together and then only make one hole in the side of the house to vent them both through?

I'm in Nova Scotia (snowy!!!!) and had the same issue when I bought my house. The HVAC guys installed a duct that runs the length of the house and vents out the gable. Fans in the kitchen and bathroom tie into it. Works wonderfully and no moisture goes up the soffits and into the attic.

You may want to crosspost this in Heating and A/C, there's a lot of HVAC folks there who can confirm, but I looked into this (we are also in Wisconsin) when we were adding a fan to our master bath and it was a no-go because of backdraft, iirc. Can't remember if it was against state building code or just not recommended. We ended up just running it straight up through the roof - just do (or have done) a proper installation with the right materials and you shouldn't have any leaks.
