I would go with the first one

I had pine cone gingers in south florida and they did great in dappled or morning light by a structure

Mine are on an eastern wall, but in a corner that is shaded from the harsh afternoon sun. They do fine there. I'll admit, the only reason they are still there is that they grew up under the block wall, and I can't dig them out. I've tried, and they keep coming back, so I just leave them.
