Hello there. I am just east of you in Danville Virginia. It is far too late to plant poppies now. They must be planted in the fall to go through a winter cycle in the ground. Till your soil and sprinkle the seeds then lightly mist with water just once to cover them. The sweet peas can be planted now. I have never grown those but the information I just found said it is best to soak the seeds in tepid water for a few hours to soften them first. Good luck with your Gardens.

It is funny that I would run across your posting by accident. I just planted my poppies today. Did you get yours in the ground yet?

Just found this. I've never planted poppies, but have started seeds in both jugs (winter sowing method) and directly in the soil. I am trying:

• Pizzicato Oriental Poppy, Papaver orientale
• Double Purple Poppy, Papaver somniferum
• Turkish Tulip Poppy, Papaver glaucum
• California Poppy, Mixed colors, Eschscholzia californica

I'll be adding more in late January, early Feb (we're adding more beds). I was worried it was a bit late (planted the above in mid-late December), but with all this rain, and crazy temps, keeping my fingers crossed!

Harold, what poppies did you sow?

I've done something rather stupid... I winter sowed many seed varieties in mid Dec, here in zone 7a in Tennessee. Normal cold weather, then unseasonably warm weather... California poppy and Turkish Tulips direct sowed and jug sowed (winter sowed) have germinated, as well as the Double Pinks. So have several other flowers. BTW, those which I sowed in jugs are far more prolific and healthy looking.

I've no experience with winter sowing (first time), and am concerned that as soon as we have our normal freezing temps for a few months they will all die. I've inquired on the WS forum, thus far no responses. My plan now is to purchase more seeds of those which have germinated, re-plant if needed but wait until February (I am such an enthusiastic fool!).
