Wow, this is amazing! Congratulations. I am always impressed by anyone that can grow things from seed. Any seed I try to grow always dies once it sprouts.

It was not hard to do..... but I did have a lot of seeds from hips and only four actually greew..... So not sure about the others why they did not come up. It could have been the fault of Irma. I had collected my hips and prepared them and then put them in the frig. I wanted to keep them there for four to six weeks, unfortunately Hurricane Irma came and knocked out the power, so the seeds got hot. Some molded. I washed them off and kept them moist and put them back in the refrigerator when the power came back on. Then around Thanksgiving I took them out of the refrigerator. Several had started to sprout, others had not. Only the sprouted ones actually grew. Some of those did not make it. I have four babies. This is the only one that has actually budded and flowered. It was a lot of fun watching it grow. I hope I can grow some more.

Ok.... just an update.... my baby rose isn't the fastest grower, but here it is with two blooms and a bud.... it is only 8 inches tall and seems to be doing well.... The flowers smell great!

Awww pretty! If you want more growth clip the buds. I usually let them bloom once, maybe twice then I pinch the buds so they put there energy into growth not reproduction. I do this just for their first season.

I have a huge red hip on Zaide. Do I have to put it in the fridge or can I just plant them outside? We are already cold.

Well putting them in the fridge to simulates winter, keeps them chilled Without freezing. You probably could keep them outside, but I would take them out of the hip and plant them in the ground. It would insulate them a bit from any freezing. For myself I like bringing them in, it greatly reduces squirrels or anything else digging them up.

So is freezing bad for them? Do they have to be squishy before I can harvest them or just red? I'm more than happy to wait until spring to plant them as I often go away for a week in the spring and would worry about them dying. One of my books says to keep them room temp in peat for a few weeks before chilling. Have you ever heard of that?

you know I can’t say with certainty that freezing is detrimental but from what I’ve read its recommended to chill them but not freeze them. I‘m sure it happens plenty in nature but I’d rather not take the risk. I’ve looked at hips in late winter and the seeds have turned mostly to mush. I might try it in the future just to see If they still germinate.

As for hips it really depends on the variety some stay green and firm some turn black, orange or red. I look at the sepals if they are in the process of drying or better yet falling off the hips are ripe.

Vaporvac as for the peat I’ve never done it but there are many ways to grow rose seeds. I don’t think there is any one right way. I personally just like to make it as simple as possible. rosebreeders.org gives you a great base line to start with but they really encourage people to figure out what works for them.

Thank you for that link! I've saved it for future study. I have a feeling this might be like my root cutting experiments. We'll see though. I'm going to take the one really red hip and put it in the refrigerator for a while and see if the other one continues to turn color while it's outside.
