Day 3. I finally got this thing on something.

Yes! I don't know why I didn't get a notification. I would have answered you sooner. I don't want to plant this body bag, so I'm hoping it takes so I can trash this, and not have to dig a crater.

If it works, next year I will be able to do some nice sized canes. I don't want to get my hopes up. I should have got started on it earlier, and did a couple more.

What is the Rose you're trying it on? Find a cheap DIY version I'm going to . I'll post it afterwards and we can compare results! I think I'm going to try Viking Queen.

Heirloom hmf says it's 7b. I hope that isn't correct. I know they err on the cautious side. I might not have cut the bark correctly. I cut strips, instead of stripping it all the way around, like he did the trees in the videos. I'd like to try blue girl, it has some healthy canes I think are big enough to strip like that.

Oh, I already grow VQ and she was tip hardy in -7F this winter and made it through the freeze though that killed so many other things to the ground. (Only to lose her longest cane to rose stem girdler! : (((( ) I'm also going to try it on my Orlean polys and some of my newer roses from ARE such as Phyllis Bide once they bloom.

Came back to let you know what happened just now. The clear side was getting green inside around the top, and I figured it was a loss (didn't see any roots). I went and cut it off. I popped it open pulled the cane out, dropped it...then noticed it had a couple roots on it. I hurriedly grabbed a high country pot, and gently potted it in organic potting soil, watered it, and put it in a shady spot. I don't know if it will survive, but I now have hope for the 3 new ones. I fully stripped the cambium layer on the 3 new ones, and covered the clam shell with foil, so sunlight stays out. I think this first one was slower to root, because I left a lot of the cambium layer, and the green mildew was from light hitting the clear side. So yeah it works, I just needed to tweak some things. I would upload a photo showing my foil covered ones, and the new potted one I just cut off, but I had to let my husband take my phone for work, because his isn't being reliable. (I mostly use mine for pics anyway lol)

One other thing, the grow discs that came with these pots are made out of that expanding coconut stuff with the gel particles that hold water. I've seen them on amazon, and it seems to work really well at staying moist.

Thank you so much for the update. Roots generally shy from light so it's not unexpected. I'm surprised they make them clear, actually. I'll check out the video tonight.

Vapor I think he made one side clear, so you can see when to pop it open. His original ones had both sides black, but I guess it was impossible to tell if it rooted that way. I should have known to cover up the clear, but I have zero experience at this. I'm just shocked. If it worked for me, doing it wrong...Anyone can do this easily.

How are they doing? Did you air propagate any others?
